This is pretty interesting but alot of hoops to jump through for some people.

I think there are probably some clever ways for service providers to step in and offer some alternatives, but of course there will always have to be some degree of trust there.

My friend gave me 5BTC on a USB, and walked me through the process of installing wallet software and importing the wallet to the compter. If I delete everything associated with bitcoin on the computer and only keep the USB, does that count as a cold offline storage wallet? As far as I know, it is the only copy of the wallet in existance.

No, with a true cold wallet, the private keys have never touched an online computer, ever. As soon as they do, it becomes a hot wallet (because the online computer could be compromised, even if the chance of that is fairly low).

The way I see it there's no 100% secure wallet, but following the steps you suggest is going to get pretty close to that.
