Thanks.  I use a "paper" wallet in the sense that I don't really print out the private key, I just store it encrypted.

I use bitaddress.org to create some key pairs and send my BTC to them. Then I'll take the info and store it in a keepass entry. I also put the info into a csv which went into a truecrypt volume that I emailed myself and stored in Dropbox. I'll eventually print a hard copy one day when I get my printer to work.

I would not ever keep the info on a single or even multiple flash devices as those are prone to failure.

Do you really need a cold wallet? How often are Bitcoins stolen? The official website says the Satoshi client offers a high level of security.

How does one move from a hot to cold wallet?

Does the cold storage client need to be encrypted or backed up?

Is there a difference between a private key and the .dat file?

If you want to spend or transfer your cold wallet, do you have to go online and dl the entire blockchain?

Good post on how to have a secure back up your secret key, I agree that the term "wallet" is confusing since the bitcoins are not actually stored in it.

sure, even an external hdd. flashes can be lost but external hdd's are more secure

100% secure, DOES NOT exist in computerland. You can try and get as close as you can, but 100% is an illusion.
The air wall, however, is still the best security.
