HOWTO: create a 100% secure wallet

Just wondering what people think is a save amount of bitcoins to keep in a single wallet.

As a newbie I would say that if I had more than 100 bitcoins that I would start spreading them over several wallets.

I think that depends on your risk comfort level, and what you do with your bitcoins. For me, a very small player, 10 or more bitcoins would be the level where I start to diversify and take extra security precautions. But if you're trading bitcoins or make large purchases, maybe a high amount would be good for one wallet, then keep a good chunk in a wallet you only access to refill your main wallet, perhaps on a secure PC like the OP was talking about.

In all honesty, nothing is 100% secure - but thanks for guiding the average user on how to at least achieve a decent level of security on their wallets.

I purchased a 100m drop proof and water proof 16gb USB 3.0 drive, for this sole purpose lol.

Wouldn't recommend safe though,  I would recommend hiding it. People will expect to look in a safe, if you are literally that worried that someone will break into your house and make off with the safe and your wallet file, why not just put a fake wallet file in the safe and hide the original somewhere else, in the lining of a jacket, or under a molding panel.

I'm a newbie and not really tech savy so I want to make sure I understand completely how this is done and if anyone could be so kind in helping me out I would really appreciate it.

1. I create a cd with the operating system on it.
2. Start the computer with the new operating system and download a bitcoin wallet
3. Then copy the wallet.dat somewhere like another cd.

Some confusion I have is if I want to copy the wallet.dat on a blank cd-r, isn't the operating system cd already in the cd drive. Can I eject the OS cd once its up and running?

Where do I find the wallet.dat?

So is the end product me with a couple of cds that have the wallet.dat on it and a piece of paper where I've written down my addresses.  And if I want to access my wallet do I just download the client again and put in place the wallet.dat? Where exactly does the wallet.dat go?

I agree most small safes that people use in homes are really only good for light security and fire protection of important papers (insurance, wills etc). Often most home owners don't even do a good job of bolting down or hiding these small safes and the crooks take the entire thing and crack it later.

If you are going to hide it securely in your house make sure it's in a place that will survive a fire or other disaster.
