@keithers

Most of recent ICOs weren't even coins, but tokens for services on top of ethereum's network. Some were partially, if not totally, independent of this or that network, they could function in any network with smart contracts -- e.g. sonm.

Some were decentralized exchanges, some were coins, like minexcoin. As far as I can tell, these were different propositions of coins, not merely copy-cats. The thing is that not even this guarantees there will be a future for them. We are in the middle of a "Cambrian explosion" of crypto.

Alternatives to BTC have been around for a couple of years or more, but BTC is still what everybody knows and what all lay people buy. Network effect counts as much, if not much more, as the tech behind. BTC can implement modifications and still be number 1 in real trade volume and market cap.

Yes you are right about that.  I have tried to be really selective on ones that I have put money into, but the mistake that I have made is not remaining diversified enough.  I have been profitable in converting back into bitcoin at good times with most alt-coins, but still would have been much better off just holding each of them for the long term.

Ultimately I know that some of them aren't going to go anywhere, but it's nearly impossible to perfectly time the market without just being lucky.

I think with the major steam behind Tezos, I could see this one shooting up right out of the gates...its remains to be seen after that...

Do we know, when ICO finishes and when Tezos will hit the exchanges?

When will Tezos first be listed on an exchange?
A few exchanges have expressed interest but there is no exact timeline for XTZ to become listed. XTZ will most likely begin listing when the Tezos network becomes active and changes in ownership can be recorded on the blockchain. The development team estimates that the time to completion is around 4 months, however, bear in mind this could take longer due to unforeseen events common in software development. The Tezos Foundation will not be able to allocate tokens until the network launches. If you are anxious about exchange listing dates, we suggest you do not contribute to the fundraiser and wait until such a listing happens.

"When is the Tezos fundraiser?
The fundraiser for the Tezos Foundation will begin on July 1st, 2017 at 6am UTC. It will last about two weeks (depending upon how long it takes for the Bitcoin network to mine 2000 blocks), and will result in a recommended allocation of tezzies (XTZ) to participants."

I think with the major steam behind Tezos, I could see this one shooting up right out of the gates...its remains to be seen after that...

Au contaire, there is absolutely no steam...if anything, people are becoming more and more skeptical of Tezos.
It might do OK, but i don't expect anything major. They claim to have better governance, but it is debatable.

I don't see how they improved in PoS problems. Still those with most coin will dominate and concentrate more and more coins in their pockets without any threshold. I didn't see any concrete solution for that.

Also the uncapped ICO worries people. Okay, Ethereum didn't have a capped ICO but that was a long time ago. ICO's were a different think back then.

How the staking works in Tezos?

Here is an overview of Tezos Proof-of-Stake mechanism from its white paper.

Quote
Our proof-of-stake mechanism is a mix of several ideas, including Slasher[1], chain-of-activity[2], and proof-of-burn. The following is a brief overview of the algorithm, the components of which are explained in more details below.
Each block is mined by a random stakeholder (the miner) and includes mul- tiple signatures of the previous block provided by random stakeholders (the signers). Mining and signing both o er a small reward but also require making a one year (unbonding will happen after one cycle, and not one year as initially suggested. Prolonging the period longer than a cycle did not really improve se- curity at the cost of immobilizing a lot of capital) safety deposit to be forfeited in the event of a double mining or double signing.

The protocol unfolds in cycles of 2048 blocks. At the beginning of each cycle, a random seed is derived from numbers that block miners chose and committed to in the penultimate cycle, and revealed in the last. Using this random seed, a follow the coin strategy is used to allocate migning rights and signing rights to a speci c addresses for the next cycle.

The best wallet should come from the official Tezos website. I suggest to store your coins in an address with a private key which you own it absolutely.

Can someone help me?  I think I must be missing something - I've been thru the white paper and everything I can find.

Where are references to block sizes and blocks per minute?  I'm trying to do some rough calculations on simple value transfer transactions per second.

<<Edit:  This seems to be the most up to date information for anyone else looking>>

We’re experimenting with different parameters for the consensus algorithm in terms of block size and block time. We’ll start conservatively and crank it up. Security first, scaling second.

https://medium.com/tezos/diff-2014-tezos-2017-tezos-1cb566cca892

So one minute block times.  Not sure about block sizes.
