That would be crazy if Vitalik ended up winning a Nobel prize because he was trying to figure out and build a way to preserve World of Warcraft game items from overzealous game developers.  Well, while we're waiting, screw ChartBuddy and all those you mentioned above!  We've got more important things to discuss like ANOTHER chance to see an aurora up close and personal. 

 Get your wife and a blanket (to wrap around you 2 to stay warm) ready philipma1957!
 Get your old SLR camera and a jacket ready JJG (and maybe a tripod if you have one)! (Not that I don't appreciate your photographs as they are... beggars/choosers etc.)

 Our resident troll was right for a change - something big is coming.  The sun unleashed another earth-directed X-class flare (for over 5 hours!) and released a huge CME along with it.  This time, both NASA and NOAA agree that the CME will strike earth late on OCT. 10th and the predictions are for a severe, G4 geomagnetic storm with the potential for a G5 (equinoctial effect) .  This means the auroras can possibly be seen as far south as Alabama.   It should be comparable to the May 11th 2024 geomagnetic storm which was visible as far south as northern Spain, south of France, northern Italy... actually if you draw a straight line on the map from Bilbao, Spain to Cluj-Napoca, Romania, the auroras were visible to many above that line.  I did see a report of a viewing in Istanbul but that's pretty sus (not saying it didn't happen but... pics?)

 Based on the model from NOAA below, it appears as though we should see initial effects around 1400hrs UTC on OCT 10.   There might be a bit of unwanted light from the moon as it will be in it's first quarter but it should be setting before midnight everywhere (in your local time).  All we need now are some clear skies. 



 It's certainly distracting me from these bitcoin doldrums; for me, there's joy in viewing this natural phenomenon and I haven't seen a decent one for 20 years.  The last time I saw one, I confused it for headlights coming over a hill until I had driven a few miles and realized the headlights were stationary.  As I got into a darker area, I knew I was looking the aurora and tried to get to a place without so many trees for better viewing (so many trees here) but they didn't last long enough... or I started out too late.  Anyway, fingers crossed!

So do I drive to the Jersey shore which would let me look north or east or south without a ton of light.


I am at  Howell NJ near:

 40.1646° N, 74.2083° W

I can go to Belmar NJ  40° 10' 42" N / 74° 1' 18" W.   puts me on the beach
