I've been building open air "trays" for mining rigs for a while now i.e. where GPUs are mounted "floating"/above the motherboard via ribbon cables. Scroll down through this thread. Or just checkout my website: Spotswood Computer Cases. Here's the "mining tray": Here's what it looks like with an ATX motherboard mounted (not included): Two standard ATX PSUs can be mounted inside that open area on the left-hand side of the tray. These can be stacked with an optional set of extra posts for $5.Price does not include USPS/UPS shipping charge (from New Hampshire, USA). PayPal only.

I just ordered a custom 4-rig mining tray; posting here as a record for our transaction. Custom 4-tray, 3-tier Mining rig: $315 on order, actual shipping costs on delivery via PayPal
Spotswood was able to make my design description into a practical product with incredible speed. Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Does this design require the use of a riser cable? Edit - nevermind, I think this answers my question... ...where GPUs are mounted "floating"/above the motherboard via ribbon cables.
|
I think snare rolls should be used as a currency.

The use of risers/ribbon cables are not required. You can use this like a "normal" motherboard tray by simply not attaching the "floating GPU beam" and adjusting the height of the expansion card beam.

This seems quite nice, but I've always been weary of using open-air cases. They're too susceptible to damage from being dropped, dropping something on them, or other things. (Cats) IMO, it's best to keep those expensive components within a regular case for their protection. After-all, you can get equally good if not better cooling by using some of those huge yet silent fans that push so much air that they essentially constantly replace all of the air inside the case. That's just me, though.

Looks like 80/20 alu extrusions with sheet aluminum for the tray.
