my Pi locks up.

I read this a lot on this forum. Maybe just having a USB device we can plug into a common consumer computer (e.g. Dell, Apple, etc) running Windows, Linux, or macOS will be a more reliable setup?

(this is a USB device you can plug into a common consumer computer running anything cgminer works on, but it also has a 5V USB power jack for running a small SBC controller like a Pi without needing anything extra)

Cool, quiet and up to 1TH pod miner, on sale now!

I remember having the same issue with my pi setting up my second's 2pacs.  It was very frustrating.  The slub debug fix in the command line fixed the issue, The thing was the file would delete itself if I ever changed the input from hdmi/LCD. Hopefully, this info will help.

I use a headless (no HDMI, ssh and serial console only) rpi3 with raspian to run 2nds 2PAC, and it runs for weeks on end without any care or feeding.

I can run 10x compac's on 1 PI v1/2 with a slight overclocked, headless, with a scheduled reboot every 45min, running debian.

I can run 10x 2pac's on an old hardkernel ODROID-X. This also ran +-50-70 gridseed orbs, 2x pepper miners and 5x one string miners at the same time back in the day with chained USB hubs, but limited to 2 chains. It is the best dev/mini board I have used to date. I have tried a newer hardkernel C1+ device and it can't run anything for longer then 5 min and just hangs.

BBB, are ok and also have USB issues, except with the gridseed blade and pepper miners. I used to run 10x blades on one BBB and never even had one lock up or issue on debian, it also doesn't like USB hub chaining.

All of the above are always headless.

Are those enabled in Minera by default? Do those cause a Pi to lock up entirely and stop responding on SSH?

The first thing I need to do is get a new Pi. Not really sure how old is the one I'm using. What's the one everybody likes right now? Version 3?

no.. im using the minera img from getminera on my model b (the old one with the yellow and blue port) pi and it doesnt reboot or shut off..

the only thing i can think that will make the pi reboot or shutoff is if you are somehow overloading the usb port.. they only do 500a and if you hit them with more the whole thing shuts off.

Had the same issue with my 2pacs and a Pi and the slub debug fix solved the problem. Running 24/7 no issues since then. That could be part of the solution but with computers, who knows...

Pardon my newbness for two secs... but by headless do you mean that you don't fully enclose them?

Have you tried using an HDMI connection instead of SSH?  My CPU usage always spiked on my pi when I tried using SSH.

I have not, because that's lame. The point of a cheap basic controller is you won't need a screen and keyboard.

People have suggested miners "need to be" something you plug in power and ethernet and it "just works", and that's all well and good if you like expensive proprietary parts that cost you like $200 to replace when they crap out. But I think that sucks, so I'm not going to do it, ever. The fewer proprietary parts, the better for everyone.

But in the interest of simplicity, I would like to have a basic option available for kit purchase. These are meant to be n00b miners, but they're also meant to be learning miners. I don't want something super easy because you don't learn anything when it's all just handed to you. So I figured a Pi with Minera would be handy, because you can run it headless and configure everything web if you want, or SSH in and play around with stuff like that if you want to learn a bit more. With, you know, off-the-shelf parts that are easy to replace when something craps out.

So plugging in a monitor would be an option, sure, but not really a good option for very many people. I want something with long-term stability in its most basic form. If there's a better option than Minera that still allows basic non-SSH cgminer configuration options (maybe something with fewer buttloads of massively unnecessary scripting all over the darn place; what does Avalon use? That's simple and effective) I'd probably go with that. But first I'll probably just try better hardware than a who-knows-how-old Pi with a probably-even-older SD card.

People seem to like the Pi3, so I'll fetch one of those for starters.

Also, no, overloading the USB port isn't happening. The pod draws on the order of 0.1mA from the USB port, just enough for the USB chip to know it's plugged into something.

Gotcha... thanks. Color me old school, but I setup a KVM switch at my little mini rig station.

The v3 I've got running your sticks randomly locks up from time to time... so not sure. It's intermittent... but I think my longest run was 4-5 days. Usually every 24 hours or so.

What's the OS? Maybe newer versions of Minera suck.

Is there a decent web frontend for configuring cgminer available on that OS? I'm a firm believer in Debian's reliability and, as handy as Minera is for configuring, honestly... I really really hate web scripting and that package has dynamic content up the butt.

I don't believe so. My brother and I set this up all command line.

Maybe you should try nwools multiminer. He's been away from the community for a little while but is back and said he's open to adding Gekko support if someone had the time to send some links and stuff. I'm in a remote location and internet is spotty at best for me till late February.

Been so busy with gpus.  Rasp pi for me has been all on Avalon for last two years.

At one time I did minera crazyguy set it up with the 110 rock miners.

I plan to run pods with my compacs on a pc.

I mine the cpu on that pc and it earns about 50 to 60 cents.

Thus it is more cost effective then a rasp pi.

Note House is filled with PCs mining gpus.

I have a small rig mining with a 1050 ti that earns about 70 cents and I have moonlander son that.

So the PCs cover the solo mining of moonlander and the Jonny bravo pool mining with the compacs and 2 pacs.

A cheap mobo with a single gpu will be what I use with the pods.  I have something which will allow for cost free Mining of the pods.

I will show what I mean Monday morning
