I opened a bitcoin qt wallet and have 98% of the block chain downloaded.  I sent a transfer to my wallet from mtgox.  I also participated in the freeebie sites.  I open my wallet and have a grand total of zero coins.  Am I missing something or does it actually take a long time to receive my coins.

The block chain is the transfer history, so if it's not up to date your transfer may be listed in the blockchain, but you cannot see it yet.
The free-Bitcoin sites often send the BTC after a day or even a week (and some not at all).

Ok, so I have to be fully updated to see my transfers every time?

If you are using the Bitcoin-Qt wallet?  Yes.

You may be interested in one of the "lightweight" wallets that don't require you to maintain/synchronize the blockchain.  If so, look into:

Electrum
MultiBit

Be careful to only download multibit from multibit.org

There is a scammer website out there that will steal your bitcoins however meager.
