I'm sure there are a lot of people out there, alongside myself, who see the huge potential upside in altcoins as mechanisms of video games and virtual economies. Wanted to put together a thread to talk/speculate about individual currencies as well as the industry as a whole.

The coins I am personally familiar with/have held include:

GAME- global video game currency solution
MobileGO- Asset on top of GAME that provides same goal within mobile gaming markets
BitCrystals- currency for Spells of Genesis
HunterCoin- currency mined through a blockchain-based mmo
Nexium- Currency for a MOBA game
Chimaera- System used to register online games and currencies on a decentralized gaming platform (pre-alpha)
Rarepepeprty- Counterparty assets representing stock in upcoming Pepecash-based game, pepe.party

What do you guys think of any or all of these coins? Are there others out there which I'm missing out on?

method for sell in-world extras. There are many potential negatives scaring companies away- for example what if they were using a eth-based coin with its contract system to handle things, but they wrote the contract poorly and wound up broke? It has to be super simple to implement, bulletproof, generate more additional funds than it costs to create and maintain, AND not add inconvenience layers to the consumer.

I think these are all valid concerns, but there are solutions to these problems, and some are not entirely crypto-based. If a company releases a game with some game-breaking mess of code, it's going to be a massive loss whether or not crypto is involved. There are setbacks to utilizing a universal currency vs. one created solely for the game. It allows players to trade with one another and profit off of one another, when that profit would otherwise go to the company. However, there are other methods that can be employed to ensure profit for the company as well- taxing transactions from player-to-player is a straightforward one, as well as selling items for currency as they are introduced into the game.

There's also the new one: Wyvern, and Wyvcorp that are just starting out.  Not 100% what they're exact model/plan is, but it does look to be picking up some steam.

Haven't heard of this one yet. Just looked in to it, seems like an interesting concept. However, it's not entirely too different than a lot of the loosely gamer-based coins (like Gameunits, for example) and no actual function yet. I'll keep a look out for it but don't think I can seriously consider this one before it has any implemented functions.

is there actually any online video game that can earn you some significant amount of bitcoin? Any games that offer earning btc are basically faucets.

I only know GAME because its on Poloniex. Im more preffer to this coin than any gaming altcoin in the market. But its good thing to know theres a lot of gaming altcoins on markets. It will boost the gaming industry for this. But i think only few of these coin will be successful. I mean, there's a lot of them. Not all of them will succeed for sure.

Had not heard about Databits, cool to see the dynamic with Shark Tank. I saw the Back to Earth ICO. Joined the Telegram to see what its all about, and wasn't particularly impressed. Lots of disorganization and no actual developers on board with the project yet.

As for Sarutobi, I've seen that game play a role for quite some time now. Had no idea a new one was in the works. Will definitely check that out!

I once llayed a game that had small amounts of bitcoin you could discover or find. Game also had a marketplace where you could sell stuff for small amounts of btc. Games like that would be cool of enough ppl played it woild be profitable to trade and craft.

you missed hyper which was a project that let you win bitcoin by playing many video game like cs go and other famous fps, now i think it's recovering because last time i've checked it was dying, the dev abandoned the project sadly, and in general i think these coins have not good support, seems that gaming and crypto can't do well together, but i like to earn bitcoin while playing, maybe we need a better project for this, with bitcoin payment integrated directly in the game itself?

Didn't include Hyper because I was under the impression it was a dead project. I would argue that there is good support. Plenty of games would work very well with a crypto economy. Makes great sense to include such functions in games with highly integrated economies. Eve Online comes to mind.

Why would you want to introduce some third party into the equation and have to deal with the volatility of the price of those coins? You're creating an extra headache for yourself that's simply not worth it. Couple or so years back I implemented bitcoin/litecoin/dogecoin payments for some clients. After awhile, all of them had me remove it as it simply wasn't worth it to them.

Game companies can realize increased profits by implementing a taxation system on player-to-player transactions and/or sell crypto as a premium currency. Emerging games can also use crypto as a method for increased exposure- if they incorporate themselves into an existing network of players by utilizing some global currency, they'll be able to bring in players already using said currency. It's also a huge draw in and of itself. Many players (illegally) coordinate real-world transactions in games like Eve Online, Guild Wars 2, Runescape, World of Warcraft, etc. Making a game that allows and even promotes such actions is a huge hook.

another i found yesterday called Age of Rust  and there was another card based game hmm Age of Chans . Age of chains is interesting because it dont have any currency as most games have but uses Bitcoin as currency, it just issue some cards that are blockage asset.


I believe games will be, for so long awaited Crpto killer app. We will see 10000 of blockchain asset games in upcoming years. All kinds and some will be really good and bring awareness of blockchain usefulness to everyone.   99% of altcoins today are there for no real reason.  game coins have reason.

Unless a crypto is going to increase their profits by a significant amount, they're not interested. Selling crypto to players? Do you think they want to get the legal headaches? Things like in game currencies that they allow people to use to buy things like lockboxes is already a huge gray area for them and a potential legal risk. We all like to think that there are or will be many people using some currency that it makes it a big financial incentive for companies, but that's simply not the case. I've recently been going through companies that used to accept a variety of coins to see what the status is and the vast majority have stopped accepting crypto. It's just not ready for that and there's no where near enough incentive for them to use it. The only case that can currently be sold to a company is if a payment processor handles 100% of everything and just sends them a "check" where the amount they're getting is equivalent or more than what they would get from fiat.
