I like it, it doesn't really bother me. Since I am new I have loads to read anyway and it helps stop people signing up and spamming the regular forum and also stops bots from signing up and spamming. I have been on forums before and every day they had 20 - 30 users joining and just spamming adverts for various products all over the place.

Regards,

Martin.

A necessary evil, but like me, i bet plenty of people only initially signed up here to finally contribute to a thread.

Getting put in quarantine, then becomes frustating.

It's psychologically difficult because people, especially the tech-savvy types here, have become used to immediate gratification in the modern technological age.

Sometimes people don't want to be stuck at (or at least near) their computer for 4 hours so that they can refresh every once in a while. Given the nature of bitcoin, that's probably not the case for most bitcoiners, but it is for some.
I don't think 4 hours restriction's intention was to make one "refresh every once in a while". I believe the real reason is to spend these 4 hours productively on familiarizing yourself with bitcoin and the forum.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't to make one refresh once in a while. I was just pointing out, for someone who really wants to get out without having to actively browse, that's a good way to do it.

That's the interesting part in my opinion. Normally if I find a forum that I feel like I'm going to be lurking I will sign up for an account right away even if I don't use it, it takes like 3 minutes or something:). Many people wait and then there annoyed about quarantine, and I understand why as you said, however I just think people should sign up for an account when they first start lurking.

I see several threads at least made every day about how to get out of newbie status and similar things because of the requirement of being online for at least 4 hours while posting at least 5 posts. I was wondering is it really that hard to get out of newbie status? I mean if you really care, spend 10 minutes and post 5 quick posts and then leave your computer on for 4 hours and refresh say every 15 minutes while staying logged in? I don't get why so many people are worried about sneaking out of newbie status.

And anyway, I can honestly say that once I came out of newbie status, while it was interesting at first and I browsed the other sub forums some, the newbie  sub forum is still the sub forum which I spend the most of my time in compared to the other sub forums.

1. Smart, witty name... props to you.
2. I am not minding this newbie status... however it will be much better when I get rid of it Wink

It's a bit annoying since I'm a lurker type. I wouldn't be posting that newbie zone has its purpose since it's already been mentioned earlier in the thread but trying hoping to get out of here eventually I'm posting this anyway.

I don't see the problem. I joined to ask a question, posted it in the newbie forum, and soon enough I will have satisfied the other requirements just by using the site normally.

why even have a newbie status?

Because there is a flood of new people and most don't even notice the fucking sticky on newbie requirements. Do we really want a bunch of newbs who csnt even read a basic sticky immediate access to all the forums to flood an already packed forum with useless posts because they can't read even basic sticky threads.

It's about as annoying as a red light. You stop, look at the time, sigh, look around some more, then go.
