It's really a small price to pay that helps out the mods a bit. You would do the same if you were in their shoes. It is what it is...

Moderating new users more carefully would surely be more respectful than disallowing replies in the regular threads.
Having to make 5 filler posts first definitely puts a dumper on the initial impulse to contribute. Maybe that initial impulse will return once I'm approved. Will it still be 'initial impulse' then? Time will tell if there's even an impulse.
One thing is sure, many relevant BTC related topics have already been discussed, so a few searches through the vast archive pre-empted the need to post at all.

They don't have to be "filler" posts. There are some interesting discussions even in the Newbie forum that one can legitimately contribute to.

I see several threads at least made every day about how to get out of newbie status and similar things because of the requirement of being online for at least 4 hours while posting at least 5 posts. I was wondering is it really that hard to get out of newbie status? I mean if you really care, spend 10 minutes and post 5 quick posts and then leave your computer on for 4 hours and refresh say every 15 minutes while staying logged in? I don't get why so many people are worried about sneaking out of newbie status.
And anyway, I can honestly say that once I came out of newbie status, while it was interesting at first and I browsed the other sub forums some, the newbie sub forum is still the sub forum which I spend the most of my time in compared to the other sub forums.
Leaving the computer alone does not seem to increase my time though. I've had this open 2 days now with "no timeout" feature selected, and I'm stuck in the 36 minute range.

It is a small price to pay if it keeps the forums advertisement/Spam free it creates more spam in the newbie forums, which makes it kind of frustrating to view. Why not add phone number or e-mail verification to improve status faster, and then add a Captcha on each post.... wouldn't that make more sense to prevent spam bots?

Well you can take my example, i've been surfing on bitcointalk for a few months now, just created an account a few days ago, and i need to post on such topics in order to get out of the newbie status, even though i have more than 10hours logged in with my newly created account

Newbie status is not hard. A few posts and a few hours. My only mistake was not realizing it existed - so I did all my FAQ reading as a guest. Would have burned the time weeks ago.

Same here - I've been following the wall observer thread for weeks, but not commenting.
When I decided to say something, i found I couldn't. So now, this is my last spammy message before I can get down to some hard core economics... I'M FREE!!!!

I understand the process but their must be a better way. Many people join the forum when a pool problem occurs and feel the need to post within the pool's section but are unable to because of the 5 post restriction (4 hours is easy), but finding worthwhile posts to reply to are harder to come by. Maybe a trial period in the pools forum only would be better, the moderators do hang out there as well.

I agree, people will just get pissed off when they can't post. I wonder what anyone is gaining with these rules?
