Stripes and flicker on screen when mining

Hi I have bought a new graphics card (Radeon HD 5850).
But when I start mining, my computer start to get unusable. Just a few seconds after starting mining, stripes fill the whole screen, then a few seconds later the whole screen is blue, then later I see the desktop again, later there are different stripes it is always changing.
The windows cursor is showing strange pixel artifacts. The Computer gets unusable and I have to reboot.

The strange thing the card work well when playing GTA IV at high setting, so what can be wrong?

Iam using Guiminer with Phoenix/Phatk. I have a Chieftec GPS-500AB 500W Power supply, and a MSI 770-C45 mainboard.

Try updating your drivers? Is it overclocked at all?

The card was overclocked by the vendor, as far as I know. My catalyst control center is up to date.

I find it strange that GTA runs very good with the card, but as soon as I start mining my desktop get destroyed

Not a good sign.  That's what video cards do when they're damaged, or the voltage/clock settings are off.  Check the temperature to make sure it's not overheating.

Something is definitely wrong!

Check your temperatures!! You can use GPU-Z for that

I had a similar issue, had to upgrade from a 450watt psu to a 600watt one to fix it.

Shouldn't 500 Watts be enough? Temperature was OK, if I remember correctly it wasn't more than 80 degrees celsius.

How can I check or the voltage settings? I have never done this before.

Stripes and back to desktop/application indicates a memory issue. Reduce the memory clock and see if that fixes it. If you are at manufacturer clock rates you should RMA. Bad memory happens.

I tried to underclock memory but it didn't help either.

You shouldn't be using your computer when mining... But you could get another graphics card and mine using only one of them while you're using your computer.

Definitely a case of overheating.

I have the opposite problem, I have a card that causes flickers whenever I'm *not* mining. Any ideas? Using Linux.

Never mind, apparently this is a known bug in fglrx 11.6, an upgrade to 11.7 fixed it.

Your powersupply may be insufficient. I would look into its wattage and your card's reccomended.

I had the same problem with Cat 11.6. Updating to 11.7 solved it.
