Did anyone expect any different? Like any corporation, PayPal is a child of the state. Very few are willing to stand up to Big Daddy on principle, even when it's obvious to everyone who isn't either an agent of the state or a cheerleader that these leaks are evidence of official malpractice.

Paypal already had a pretty bad reputation of banning accounts for weird reasons, or without giving reasons at all. They are an unreliable company.

Isn't it best to build up the alternative donation methods now so that Wikileaks doesn't have to shut down its servers and operations once the government does cease Wikileaks's bank accounts? The end result is likely to be the same. It doesn't matter if someone in this community proposes to Wikileaks or not, they are very net savy. Someone in their structure is going to propose bitcoin to them, and there is no way for us, or anyone, to prevent them from using it. Hopefully they will also be willing to commit as much of their own resources to the security of bitcoin if they do so openly. We still don't have the strength to withstand the full force of the US government. |

Which companies who accept bitcoin are outside the sovereignity of the US ?
What if you didnt donate to wikileaks itself but donated to their hosting providers?
Who can argue that your purpose was to support wikileaks?
Unless I have things wrong and they now think you are guilty of "thought" crimes.

No. http://cryptome.org/ preceeded wikileaks by a decade and created by John Young (the co founder of wikileaks ). http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-20011106-281.html here he is critisizing wikileaks at a hacker conference in New York. http://cryptome.org/cryptome-sar.htm they have even been accused of money laundering and had their account pulled by paypal . http://www.wired.com/politics/law/news/2001/04/42860
The prosecution also called John Young, a New York City architect who runs cryptome.org and is a frequent participant in the cypherpunks discussion list. Good point...Wikileaks would find about bitcoin by themselves (or likely already know about it) anyway, and would thus make a decision on their own whether or not they thought bitcoin would be beneficial to them. And the argument could be made that it would be best if there were no formal connection from the bitcoin community to the wikileaks organization, whereby a bitcoin " representative" or " leader" speaks to a Wikileaks " representative" or " leader". |
