use bitcoin core it's the best and most secure, but require a large storage at first for synching the blockchain, but then you can use the prune mode to reduce space

I understand that letting your Bitcoin Core run for at least a few hours (maybe 6?) everyday help keep the system even more decentralize as well, there's no financial benefit though and require a constant internet connection.

I agree with you that block chain is a very safer and reliable source for wallet of bitcoin. There are lots of wallet which are good but you have to take care your wallet that's the point . Blockchain , coinbase are good secure it's my point of view. The most secure wallet i think is a hardwallet. It can be trezor or ledger nano, but you must buy it because they are not free.
Other option is using a client wallet that you can download at bitcoin.org and need to sync the blockchain database.
