There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

anyone else have trouble with their GLDcoin syncing? With macs do you need to put that GLDcoin.conf still in place or is it already handled?

Thanks!

I believe my GLDcoin wallet is up to date for the hard fork that happened on June 3, but you may need to put something in a conf file--that is really a question of what's going on in the network. You may also have to wait until the next block is mined before a sync starts. If you do want to create a conf file, it should go in "~/Library/Application Support/GLDcoin".

Thanks! It was all synced up until yesterday and now just constantly spinning. Anychance you can give me example of your .conf file?

I don't have one, but I also haven't synced my GLDcoin wallet in a couple of weeks. Maybe worth checking out this thread? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=231834.0

also is it just me or does Litecoin-qt take a really really long time to sync up every time you start? like half a day? Is it necessary to make a litecoin.conf for osx wallets if your not solo mining?

p.s. anychance on getting a EMERALDcoin wallet made? thanks for all the hard work!

You shouldn't need a conf for Litecoin-qt. Mine syncs pretty slowly, but more like 20 minutes than half a day. You may just be connecting to slow peers; one thing you can try is deleting (or moving) the peers.dat file in ~/Library/Application Support/Litecoin, to force the wallet to look for new peers.

I'll add EMERALDcoin to my list!

Couldn't sleep last night. So, more wallets!

UPDATES:
  • Added BitGem wallet.
  • Added Bytecoin wallet. Note that the menu bar for Bytecoin says "Bitcoin-Qt"--that's in the original source code. It's still Bytecoin.
  • Updated Megacoin wallet to 0.8.993.

UPDATE: Updated my Namecoin-Qt build to the latest version, 0.3.63. This version also has a workaround for the crash on exit that some people were seeing.

I see that too. I looked into it, and this is probably true of all the Litecoin-based wallets. Apparently, Litecoin suffered a DDOS attack recently and they've put up a new patch to avoid that in the future. I'm going to be going through the wallets (including WDC) in the next couple of days and updating them where I can, but bear in mind that the devs of each of the altcoin wallets will have to pull that code from Litecoin before their wallets stop showing that error--it won't automatically get pushed out to altcoin wallets.

In the meantime, though, all the wallets will still work fine--nothing about the network protocol has changed. The message is only a warning.
