I feel bad having to post fillers. It is a bit of a catch 22. You need 5 posts, but all the threads you want to post on aren't in the newbie section. Feels a bit silly to have to keep starting a new thread just to link to the thread you want to comment on and post your comment. And hardly anyone will read your thread in the newbie section, so it doesn't result in any productive discussion. So basically I've spent nearly 2 months on here getting to 5 posts, but here I am finally, post number 5.

oh i just thought of a really clever answer. have them send a message using bitmessage of a length that is sufficient to require the computational resources necessary to effect the desired level of spam mitigation.

Rep Thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=381041If one can not confer upon another a right which he does not himself first possess, by what means does the state derive the right to engage in behaviors from which the public is prohibited?

I think the 4 hour rule is enough in itself. Why also having to post 5 times? If a newbie wants to post during his newbie time with a question, he can do it in the newbie forum, but I don't see why he HAS to.

I wish there was a way to get around it. I guess I understand it's to keep the riff raffs out. However, I joined because I needed to PM Slush that his new user registration is not sending out activation emails. So I have to wait 4 hours and post a few nothings to do so. I feel bad having to post fillers. The first post was to ask if anyone can PM him for me to look into the issue though, so that wasn't much of a filler.... I guess reading 4 sentences for you was too hard. In all the time you've been on these forums (including your time in newbie prision) you couldn't spend the 20 seconds to read beyond the 3rd sentence of the Newbie Readme? It doesn't surprise me that 4 hours is an eternity for you. I suspect that 5 posts and 4 hours won't be sufficiently long enough for you.

Also instead of 5 posts or 4 hours another member with at least 200 posts can "vouch" for a newbie. His account is then tied to the newbie's and if the newbie gets banned then the vouching member gets banned.
What's the incentive to vouch in that case? It could work if the member trusted the newbie out in dirtspace/meatspace - "guy in the next office" kind of thing. "Mentoring" has good potential, but there would have to be checks and balances to make sure the "mentor" wasn't some mole King of Spam or whatever. You also have to assume that people aren't geographically separated.

Make a Verified User confirm for a newbie. In the form of a invite could help a ton.
Do you mind vouching for learnmore? If you're wrong about him you get banned though Cue 100s of newbies begging you via pm for an invite...

I don't mind so much the 5 post rule, as it keeps out spammers. BUT one thing it took me a long time to figure out is WHY i couldn't reply in the other sections of the forum. It's not clearly delineated anywhere that caught my eye so it left me wondering if something was malfunctioned or if I was blocked or something.
And what was it that needed figuring out that wasn't in the Newbie readme? Or did you not spend anytime reading?

Nice algorithm - the implementation is going to be a bummer though lol

I'm not happy about this newbie status and restrictions on communicating. I'm not a newb in the world of BTC and mining. I need the ability to communicate with others ASAP!

don't get me wrong...the required time of trolling the forums has taught me a lot...just wish I could ask some questions in certain threads.
