As a current level of newb and close to four hours of reading my conclusions are this:  Everything that is trying to be prevented is still occurring. Posts such as "this is my 5th post" are not helpful and only extend a thread when people are looking for information. The four hours to me is neither here nor there as I am new to mining and trying to get as accurate information as possible.

So what is the fix you ask? I'll be honest and say that there isn't one simply because getting people to agree on anything is a challenge.  If you lower the 5 post 4 hour minimum then people will whine about the amount of spam by newbs or anyone else for that matter. If you leave it intact you continue to get people posting (whining) that they have to make 5 posts and read for four hours for the topic of all five of their initial posts. This thread contains some really good proposals for how to solve the problem but then the other human factor rears it's ugly head and it's called human laziness. No one wants to invest the effort to implement the fix so it will continue to spiral.

Don't know if anybody has said it yet, but there is the whitelist request thread, that is a simple way to get around the 5 post limit.

5 posts is stupid, doesn't stop anyone from spamming who wants too and annoys new users

You have 4 hours to write 5 posts. Seems enough time to put some quality posts in here.

I have no issue with the waiting period and five post thing.  What was a little frustrating is wanting to get into the block by that canary has, and not being able to do so immediately.  Good things come to those who wait and I can wait for the next block buy if I miss this one.

In terms of solutions to get around the bot issues, trolling, etc.  Perhaps requiring a very small donation would solve the bot problem, might increase bit coin velocity slightly as people have to get hold of bit coins to post, and would keep away some trolls.

That's my newbie 2 cents.

5 posts makes some sort of sense however for some people who are bitcoin enthusiasts elsewhere, coming here and not being able to be involved right away is a bit frustrating.

I think a limitation by time is much better than the 5 post restriction. We could save a lot of spam released by newbie  ...

Why not just have new members unable to post a link for the first 5 posts, or have any posts with a link by new members flagged for review by a moderator?  Other forums have that.

We should make a whitelist thread or something...

I noticed earlier in this thread that a quiz might be a viable option; this could be implemented for the first few (or few dozen) posts by new accounts.
This would probably not help with duplicate or sock puppet accounts though.
I just wish I'd bothered looking at the sign-up terms before I stared lurking because i've racked up days of reading, not just hours!

My idea is to introduce pre post captcha for new users (first 20 posts or sth) and remove it instantly if user is a donator, honestly - what is the point for me trying to post sth serious when it appears i have to pos bullshit on newbie forums at first just to get to post in a thread I'm really interested in ...
