Just being safe.  It wouldn't be unheard of for an altcoin dev to slip a virus into a fresh update, thinking no one would be paying attention.

I did some googling though.  Baidu is not a very reliable antivirus program, and seems to find versions of this particular virus in everything from Mullvad VPN software to the Bitcoin core wallet and even Euro Truck Simulator 2.  So I'm gonna say odds are you are being honest.

^this is the error I receive. They are both cold MNs. If i click start alias, they go in pre-enabled state and then expire after a while.

The main problems are clear. It takes time to test and fix the new version.

Nope, it should be saying "Masternode successfully started". Do the following

1. Make sure the path in crontab for sentinel is correct
2. Stop daemon: desire-cli stop
3. Update to v0.12.2.1 (either pull from github and recompile, or download the new binaries)
4. Restart and reindex all chain: desired -reindex --daemon
5. Wait for it to sync the chain: desire-cli getinfo
6. Wait for it to syn the masternode: desire-cli mnsync status, you should get MASTERNODE_SYNC_WAITING/MASTERNODE_SYNC_FINISHED
7. Start mastenode: desire-cli masternode start

For completeness,
desire-cli masternode status : should say it is started
desire-cli masternode list: your collateral txid should be there, status PRE_ENABLED. After some blocks it should change to ENABLED

For anyone that got the issue with the new update (concerning the MN protocol version), you need to clone the past github directory :
wget "https://github.com/lazyboozer/Desire/archive/Desire-v.0.12.1.5.tar.gz"
tar -xvzf Desire-v.0.12.1.5.tar.gz
then install it again using this guide "https://medium.com/@rmarle70/desire-masternode-setup-guide-ubuntu-125b148280ba"

New update works fine for me, even if I have the WATCHDOG_EXPIRED status because I haven't installed Sentinel yet. Still, got a payment an hour ago, so not sure it's really needed for Desire, but I will still install it to have the proper ENABLED status.
Btw it was showing Invalid protocol version before I updated my wallet and used it to start my MN (using cold setup).
