Well, on June 1st USDT was fully backed 1-1 and more according to a prestigious law firm contracted to have a sift through Bitfinex/Tether's shit. That doesn't speak for any other day in the past and we'll probably never know whether it was naughty, but going forward, there it is.

It is important to note that this date was chosen by the law firm and tether did not know the date the bank balance was confirmed until after the fact. This means tether/Bitfinex cannot have sold bitcoin in order to raise sufficient USD to prepare to have their balance match on that date.

Yes, that is completely impossible, Quickseller!

Oh, wait:
Quote
But Hoegner said the law firm had "unfettered access" to Tether's bank balances beginning in March,
even though the report only addresses the balances of one day.

So basically the law firm only had access to data from March to June. This is precisely the period where the
Tether "FUD" was at a low level and Tether refrained from issuing hundreds of millions of USDT every few days.

The much more relevant and interesting time period before March (e.g. March 2017 - February 2018) has been
completely omitted.

It is interesting to see that the outstanding USDT are indeed backed as of June 1st, but stating
that Tether/BFX cannot have sold Bitcoin (or other cryptos) in advance is either disingenuous or a blatant
case of a non sequitur.

Standard example of a non sequitur:
1. The universe has had a beginning.
2. Therefore it also must have an end!!

The Quickseller non sequitur in question:
1. All USDT are backed as of June 1st, 2018.
2. Therefore Tether/Bitfinex cannot have sold any Bitcoin to prepare for the balances to match!!

Even you must admit that the lack of evidence that any Tethers were ever 'printed' without being fully backed is making the whole conspiracy theory look very silly now.

Where did hogner say that the lawyer had access since March?

Tether doesn’t print USDT on a whim, they print it based on demand. They didn’t just stop printing USDT, the demand for additional USDT is not there.

How long withdrawals usually take ? Last time a few months back Bitfinex's ETH "processing" before transaction took about 2 hours.

Now XRP withdrawal has been under "processing" like 3 hours or so. Just curious, not really complaining (yet)...

cheers

edit: it took 7½ hours to get those ripples moving...  Roll Eyes  kind of eats the idea of quick handling of value. i mean 15mins would ok, but this hours long waiting...  Undecided

It would be best if someone from Bitfinex will provide the real news about that article. Well, I just can't jump into conclusion that this article is real and that one of the two banks that cater Bitfinex severed its ties with the said exchange. The only data that I gathered from it is that “a person with direct knowledge of the situation” said something about what I cited above. This can't be proven right away but then again, this is not impossible to happen.

Bitfinex will never provide real news about tether. However this article is baseless shit put together by nothings from nowhere so not worth paying attention to.

I don’t really think this is news. Bitfinex and tether got a new bank account somewhere. Other exchanges seem to have followed suit (who were banking at the same bank).

Also, banks don’t pay to convert USDT to USD, they process withdrawals as directed by tether (and Bitfinex when customers are withdrawing from their Bitfinex accounts). It is tether that will payout USD in exchange for USDT, and will only do so to customers who are vetted via KYC, are exchanging above a certain threshold, and generally will not do business with those connected to the US.

https://coincodex.com/article/2494/bitfinex-re-opens-fiat-currency-deposits-with-new-system/

There's still a $300 difference between Bitfinex and the other exchanges. New deposit system or not, it seems like faith in Bitfinex hasn't been entirely renewed.

And deposits aren't the only issue. Bitfinex said yesterday that fiat withdrawals were operating "without the slightest interference" but people are complaining across social media about missing bank transfers. Supposedly, they're working through a backlog.

If fiat withdrawals start flowing again, prices should return to normal.

Bitfinex partnered with Hong Kong Bank of Communications.
Payments will be made through a private account of Prosperity Revenue Merchandising Limited.
Citibank acts as a correspondent bank when transferring funds from Bank of Communications to the USA. Wells Fargo also performed the same role for Bitfinex partners in Taiwan before suspending the processing of iFinex Inc. services. and Tether Ltd. in April 2017.

At the same time, Tether Ltd. has entered into an agreement with the Bahamian Deltec Bank. Operators of some OTC platforms also expressed a desire to open accounts with this bank for direct cooperation with the issuer USDT.
