I just bought a brand new computer that I am expecting sometime next week. It has a GTX 1070 and a 600 W power supply. Does anyone recommend that I try to mine with the new desktop? I'm just paranoid that mining will make my computer have a short life. The computer is liquid cooled for the CPU, but I am not sure about the GPU. Probably the GPU has to rely on air cooling.(I must admit, when I bought it last night, I did pick a GTX 1070 because I was hoping to mine with it, since I am not a gamer. I read an article that makes it appear that although the GTX 1070 get less hashrate than a GTX 1080, the GTX 1070 is more power efficient.)
Here is the link to what I bought. Hope that I picked something decent. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883230240

who cares about any other hardware past the 1070 for mining..

If it has it, use it.

My single 1070 in my gaming PC mines the rest of the time its not actively being used.   That card has already paid for itself and then some.  I was lucky and bought during the last hot streak and ROI'd pretty damned fast.

My old 980 Earned ~3x what I bought it for... before I replaced it with a 1070 and put it in one of my miner chassis..... and today, is still on 24/7.

I thought the Optane memory drive will help with the speed of reading and writing to the hard disk. I want the capacity of a HDD to store my large music library.

Isn't the power supply also important? Is 600W good enough if I want to upgrade the card in the future?

600 watts is fine for 2 1070s as long as you power them down a little using afterburner. If you want to add 3 or more cards I would recommend upgrading the PSU especially if the one you have is bronze rated. For comparison I am running 4 1070s and an i5 processor. Without any tweaking I was pulled 1058 watts from the wall. With afterburner powering them down to 65% I am pulling 668 from the wall and haven’t lost any hashrate using equihash in EWBF. Plenty of settings for overclocking your cards on the forum. Find one that matches your brand and go from there.

Your CPU could also probably make you some extra mining monero

yes, power supply is important, but since its only 1 1070, using on average 160wMAX, you have LOTS of headroom.  most cpu are <150w.

You should be fine to add a second 1070 as long as your 12V rail can support it, and you have proper case ventilation.

Your desktop configuration is good, GTX 1070 is one of best choice I think. With a 600W PSU, you even could add 1 more GTX 1070 which has TDP is only 150W, for me I usually set power limit at 75-85% depend on PSU quality. Btw, if your GPU stays around <70C, it can last in very very long time.

Good. I hope mine runs quiet as well. Can't stand the high pitched whine of loud fans.

I can't wait to get my new computer.  Cheesy I have only tinkered with GPU mining since the computer that I have at the moment only has an AMD 7570. It will be great not to have to rent hash if I want to mine a new coin that comes along. Maybe I will warm up to ETH, ZEC and Monero if I can actually mine it myself.

As anyone suggested using MSI Afterburner or similar software to set power limit down to 70-80% will lower TDP and temperatures.
 I have 4 1070s mining at 60-65 °C fan 50-60% power limit 66%.
When your pc arrive use software like GPUZ to discover the manufacter of the RAM chips of your GPU.
Samsung chips give the better results at mining, you can easily OC them in Afterburner to +500 to have better hashrates.
You can give mining a try with simple software like NiceHash (payout in BTC), or One Click Miner ( payout in VTC ).

1070 is good for mining, these days mining is not going to critically affect your PC life expectancy.
If your electricity cost is not that expensive and you are ok with small amount of mining outcome, I recommend mining.

Your system is very high configuration, and you can easily mine with this GPU. But the problem is with one GPU you can't mine more coins, and of course, your electricity bill will be very expensive and if you bought this system for your personal use then don't mine because your system will die very soon. I am also using almost same configuration system, but mine is 3.6ghz and rx580. I am using it to do my animated work not mining any coin. Finally it is up to you.

The most vital components that can fail are the motherboard and the hard drive. I can live with the GPU or the CPU failing, since they are replaceable. The hard drive could fail too, but I  really should invest in an external drive too. Most of the stuff in my music library was purchased from the itunes store, so that is retrievable. However, there is some stuff that I ripped from other people's CDs and downloaded for free that would be difficult to replace.
Could heavy mining contribute to an early motherboard failure?
Since I do not game nor do I do video editing, I feel the GTX 1070 is probably going to be an extravagance if I do not use it at least part time to mine.
I also am pretty familiar with monitoring the temperature of my CPU and GPU since I used to use both rather heavily when I was doing Boinc in 2012 - 2014. If the mining is causing the temperature to rise too much, even after an occasional once over with the canned air, I will abort mission. Also, if I find the sound from my GPU fan is driving me crazy, I will abort mission.

if its just one gpu; and not overclocked.... temps are of zero concern.... as long as the case itself is ventilated.

Adding a second GPU; you willprobably expect ~70-75* in a stock closed case.  Which is totally fine.

Phil on this site has a habbit of underclocking his cards, up to 20%... which lowers stress and heat.  Your call if you wish to do that =)  I have several 960 cards that I have run at 80* solid for over a year with minimal downtimes (country living issues).  They are still pretty solid performers and I think I have re-pasted them once.  I am getting ready to retire them for 10 series cards and pop them in my friends' gaming computers so they are finally off the 5 and 6 series cards and seeing more than 25fps in games =)

I am looking at the picture of the case that I will be getting. Both the front and the back panels seem to have plenty of ventilation holes. I don't really see any case fans, though. I assume that the power supply has it's own fan as well as the GPU. The CPU liquid cooling unit also appear to be connected to some kind of fan as well. The case that I will be getting seems much better than the current Dell XPS that I have had for 5 years. Plus the side panel with the window that swings opens appears to be easier to access for cleaning than my current computer. Furthermore, the case dosn't appear jammed packed like my Dell case does. (The dell power supply takes up a lot of room.) Maybe I am thinking the new case is the bees knees because Dell's cases appear to be near the bottom of the barrel.  Cheesy

@OP  Cool man, welcome to mining Cheesy ya one card will only do so much, but if you were gonna pick a starter card a 1070 is a great choice
They use little power, and are great miners, use resources like whattomine+ the ANN board to profit hunt, or set and forget it to nicehash (they usually place 3-10th in daily profit, tho sometimes higher for 1070)
https://www.nicehash.com/profitability-calculator -- resource for mining on THEIR system calculations

Good Luck!

I think it certainly shortens the life of your system.  Usually computers do better running 24/7 rather than the spike of turning them off and on, but you are talking about running your video card under heavy load 24/7.

How much it shortens the life,  never know.  I've had computers for 10 years (just web browsing) and they never died, just got replaced.  I think obviously the weak link is the video card but it is likely to pay for itself before the 1st year of warranty runs out (1.50 a day x 365 = 547.00).

dell cases are known for being cramped....   It's the main downside to their designs (aside from caps that only last ~5 years give or take).

Sounds like you will be fine on ventilation.  Be sure to clean any dust screens once a week [if any] if in a rural area like I am.

if you aren't overheating the card <83*c, you are fine.  The card starts thermal throttling above 83*c from what I can gather.  They should be plenty capable of running @ ~80C steady.

I have never shortened the life of a device by running it at max... I have killed devices by running them out of spec, or on very dirty power.... never by throttling them to 100%.  Its almost always something else such as a bad overclock, dropped a screwdriver, etc...

example:
I have an i7-920 C0 CPU.  It has run at 4Ghz and is on all day (its a fileserver, and video streaming relay/processing server)

It sits at thermal limit (100c) all day, or at 80-83*c while idle.  Its cooled on water.  No failures.  Been run like that for over 2.5 years.

I have yet to kill a video card by any reason other than by physically/personally damaging one, or ending up with a defective card.

Maybe I am lucky...

OK, this is the gpu that I received. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/b3999/evga-gtx-1070
I'm trying to tinker with MSI Afterburner.
Unfortunately, My card is now running on 80 C with fan at 60%. The whine is starting to bother me..
I am getting only 410 sol/s with Equihash using Excavator 1.3.5a. Here are my other settings.

Power:80
Core:100
Memory:175

I have tried to set the memory high, but notice that the GPU crashes if I push it too far.
Perhaps I am not built for mining. The whine from the fan is like scratching on a blackboard to me...Will I get used to it?
