We have seen a lot of Bitcoin forks with the Bitcoin name being used to piggy back on it's popularity. These coins market themselves with supposed superior brands and names like Bitcoin Gold and Bitcoin Cash.
These names might become confusing with every new fork, because we will soon see forks like Bitcoin Platinum and Bitcoin Ultimate.
Why should we not officially rename Bitcoin <BTC> to Bitcoin Original for people to make a clear distinction between the original Bitcoin and the rest? New investors might buy one of these Alt coins, mistaking it for the original/legacy coin?
Just a thought. What would the technical implications be? What needs to change? ^smile^

First of all, doesn't this thread belong under "Bitcoin discussion" possibly? I personally think that the name should remain the same, since then some else coin could steal the "Bitcoin" name and we would be left with Bitcoin Classic right? I do not think that changing any names or tickers will solve anything because then we would have Bitcoin Classic Gold, Litebitcoin Classic and so on. People will continue making copycats for sure when talking about open source software because it can be done so quickly and just changing few things.

Really if an investor wants to invest in a coin that they'll probably see as falling from $7000+ to $200+ they're a bit crazy.
The bitcoin tickers are normally easier to find on sites like exchanges and it does open an opportunity to get into cryotocurrency with smaller amounts if they want to use the other chains as a test. That being said, if we get a lot of forks with propagating blockchains, maybe better to change the name of bitcoin gold and bitcoin cash and the forks to come.

any one can make his own virtual coin and use any name . we all know how bitcoin success and how price of BTC increase fast , new economizes try to make fast money using bitcoin name so for newbie when you find bitcoin have 7,000$ and keep increase and other coin(have same bitcoin name) have 300$ you will think other coin will increase fast like bitcoin so this call economic trick and any company use this may be scam and will end fast

I think that change name of original BTC from BTC to anything else would be wrong and completely unnecessary. What people recognize as the only original is marked with BTC so there should not be too much confusion. It would be good that Bitcoin name was protected on some way so others can not use it today for some altcoins which are only more or less bad copies of BTC.But today's copies and those that will just come certainly create a some confusion, especially for those who encountered BTC for the first time.

Only people who has known about Bitcoin before these forks would have known that BTC is short for Bitcoin. For us this is second nature, but for new people this is confusing. I had two friends who had phoned me to ask why the price of Bitcoin dropped to $400 and I had to explain to them that it was not BTC. <The original Bitcoin> We will not be able to change the white paper <not that we want to>, but we can change the way people talk about Bitcoin on forums and the media and other public platforms.

Doesn't Bitcoin just being "Bitcoin" imply that it's the original one? I feel like that's enough of a distinction. This way, basically everything Bitcoin with a suffix is an altcoin.
But yeah, all these forks are just ridiculous, and are confusing to people new to the cryptocurrency scene. I don't think we can do anything about it though. The only real solution is for people to educate themselves. If they end up buying the wrong coin, they're probably not cut out for cryptocurrency in the first place.

In my opinion, we're good with just "bitcoin", if you're worrying about investor confusion, let them be confuse. It's probably their fault when their confuse not doing their research to make an informed decision.

Bitcoin is bitcoin, it is original. Bitcoin gold, 2x and others are new coins, they are altcoins. BTC is BTC not others, everyone want to change btc to other names, it will not change the coin and the price, btc will be btc not original btc.

I do not think this is a good idea, we should not change its original name if the parent to bitcoin does not want. We should respect the original decisions.

You are right to be concerned about those things. But to be honest name Bitcoin is just fine. All people who want to join world of Bitcoin should learn basic things about it, and that mean Bitcoins name. Only those who do not care enough will make a mistake, and maybe they should. I am not concerned about those names, because they will never be able to compeat with Bitcoin and therefor will be nothing more than a try to copy real Bitcoin.

Name changes are small potatoes.
The big growing changes are likely going to come from the NSA. We have no idea what those motherfuckers have up thier sleeve!
Maybe letting Bitcoin cryptography out was a mistake, we really cannot be sure..
At any rate going along for the crypto ride seems like a good idea for now.
Ya might also wanna plant some tomatoes and potatoes...

the name should remain the same, one word better than two words, easy to write on shirts, on screen, on everything. why some people here want to change it, just to not confuse newbies! BTC is always on the top.

We'll see what coin is going to hold the name of Bitcoin after segwit2x. What if bitcoin core gets less hashrate and becomes less valueable? Do you still like the name "Bitcoin Original", if it eventually looses it's dominance and become altcoin?

this is not new. they have been using bitcoin's name from early days. there currently are bitcoin dark, bitcoin black and a couple of other bitcoin somethings around and they are all altcoins and nobody ever confuses them with bitcoin. and the name is simple enough. it is short and sufficient we shouldn't change the name to add a trailing word just because they keep creating new altcoins while abusing the bitcoin brand.

I think for newbies and people who do not research about cryptocurrency will be confused but for people who already know bitcoin then no matter how many forks that adds bitcoins name on it they will not be confused

why should "we" do anything at all? they are the ones creating altcoins left and right from bitcoin. and it is no confusion in my opinion, their names are clear enough for anyone to understand that is not bitcoin. it is like those Chinese products that use the same name as the original ones but they are clearly crap.
and lets say for a moment that we changed the name from bitcoin to bitcoin original, what will you do when they forked this and created "bitcoin very original" or "bitcoin original 2.0"!

Honestly the odea of renaming Bitcoin soinds like a shitty plsn to scam people. It sounds realy hard (impossible) to keep the whole community updated about the current BTC (not anymore?) name.
