 ICO is very simple way to raise funds. Not all ICOs are bad. Before joining you should investigate ICO, business plan, their team work. Once you are sure that ICO is deserve then you join. There are serious projects  the market but and most of them are  scammers. Be careful when choosing a project.

under the guidance and supervision of a reliable team, there's a great deal of

I don't think what you think. yes I admit there are some dubious ico and lead to the scam. but not all, there are plenty of good ico and brilliant idea and technology. I think you should be looking for more knowledge about various ico.

Truly ICO's can get you big profit in terms of rapidity. However the only drawback is that its difficult to tell which one is real or fake. I highly suggest you to do some digging about the project before you jump into that. There are a lot of Altcoins lately you can make big profit if you invest in the right ones

Correct.

Everything that can be raising fund in any way can be potentially scam in the end. No matter how they called it in the end something new will come up always.
We have seen so many ICO that ended up as scam.

You just have to be careful which one you choose. Not all ICOs will just run away with the money. Look for the ones with good website and the ones that look like they already put some work into it.

It would also be interesting to define what scam is. Since we have so many coins nowadays and many of them are just using the market to pump and dump and being accused of such (NXT or XVG anyone?)

I wouldn't say it's free because you gotta put money on it first and you never know if you're gonna earn some profit from it because investing on ICO's is like a gamble, you gotta be smart and have luck to win because on the otherside of winning, it can bring you down and lead you to bankruptcy if you go all in.
