If you agree post here. if you disagree post here to.

What is Nested Quotes?

Thats when you quote someone and it takes all quotes in your post. by ticking a checkbox in the admin control panel, you can disable this, and it will only quote the exact message you are replying to. This is useful because:

prevents conversations to be taken out of context(by making it necessary to read an entire thread to understand the flow of the conversation.

reduces clutter in the thread.

reduces the amount of pages in a thread.

it just plain looks better.

I enabled this for a short time in the past, but for some reason I disabled it again. I don't remember why.

how exactly does removing nested quotes add more context? if anything, it reduces context and forces users to guess what each other is talking about.

It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

it forces them to read the thread, instead of just the quoted block of text

eh, i'm not trying to bust your balls either. it just annoys me. this thread should help me gauge how much interest there would be in disabling them. I may be in the minority on this one, and i'm fine with that.

I think it adds more confusion to have them disabled.

I dunno, I usually trim em out. Guess I'm used to it, I do see a lot of people mess it up though.

it forces them to read the thread, instead of just the quoted block of text

But many times there are multiple sub-threads going on at once. It is nice to have all the relevant quotes right in one place so everybody can keep track of who said what.

Also, it is easy enough to quote and delete out the layers of quotes you don't want. Takes like 3 seconds when you make your posts.

-1

(or should I say +1?)

errr, I agree with Tysat, BadBear and Peter, having nested quotes is good.

Exactly. I do it all the time when the nested quotes aren't needed for context.

Exactly what I do too...
Next will be to stop editing of the quote.

i dont know if its possible, but it would be nice if you could highlight the desired text and when you click quote have that section already trimmed and ready to post.

Good idea! That would save a lot of time when quoting a wall of text or a 'quote hell'

+1
Doing it regularly when quoting longer posts / nested quotes.

Nested quotes are necessary, disabling them would remove context and waste people's time.

+1
Leaving unnecessary parts of the quotes wastes it either. But it's on each poster to remove them and leave the relevant ones in.

This could often lose the context I'm afraid. I believe that carefully removing parts of the quote by hand woud have more optimal Smiley results.

It's just a different way to quote, this doesn't make people stop quoting the whole context if it is necessary
