Hi everyone,

I would like to ask your opinion, what would you buy for yourself.

I have the option to buy rigs for around 6000 USD, together with someone. We already have some 160 Mh/sec Ethereum mining rigs with R9 290 since 2013 but we would like to add some hashing power now that we have started mining again since 3 months ago.

My choices are: RX 580 for Ethereum and Vega 56 for Monero (and then exchange to Ethereum).
I am thinking that RX 580 is already older generation and it will have a lower value than Vega 56 if we will want to sell the rigs in the future.

Power consumption is irrelevant as we have free electricity.

Thank you for taking the time to answer this.

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

in the case if you will stick with ETH - the choice is ok, but for me there is so much more coins which much more profits then ETH
even cryptonight coins for Vega - like ETN, MONERO, AEON and etc.
my advise take a look for one nvidia rig - 8 x 1080ti

I was thinking of Nvidia but the 1080 Ti is way out of budget in that amount.. but I think it can mine more coins than the Vega though. At most I could afford 6 vega .. and that means probably 5 1080 TI's.. I would not be sure about resale value of the 1080 Ti's later.

I need to look into profitability of CryptoNight with other coins too, it seems Vega is more and more a choice, but I am so afraid of instability problems because drivers still having problems, problem which might be solved in the future..

Thanks for the tip !

If you have free electricity, you can do just like me : try to find some second-hand R9 290 as they will be cheap and their hashrate is great (but you already know that Wink )

Otherwise, RX580 are great if you can find it

I would take nvidia 1070s.
You get around 31MH/s with a single 1070 mining ETASH.
And you have way more room to diversify.

Isn't the GTX 1070 mining at 700/800 H/s Monero ? If compared to Vega 56 that can mine at almost 2000, this is a big difference. The price difference is only 100 USD for these cards. Also, Vega can do 40 Mh/sec on Ethereum, which is around 30 % more than GTX..

Yea, I tried to find more R9 290 but price is 280 USD or so each even used and I can't trust used cards. The price of a new RX 580 with 8 GB is around 370 USD and plenty available in Romania. With 6000 USD I think I could buy 14 pieces including 3 mobo+CPU+memory. That would make 420 Mh/sec (I already have 180 Mh/sec) which should bring 600 USD/month (total of 900 USD/month), just a little less than Vega 56 that would bring maybe 660 USD/month using Monero, but if I use Vega 56 for Ethereum that would bring only 340 USD/month..

If I do the step with Rx 580, I could add ~ 2 video cards a month to the farm, that means a 10 % increase. This results in a total of ~1800 Mh/sec in a year which will produce 2500 USD/month profit.

I have almost no cost for rig frames, because I sell aluminum extrusion which I buy factory direct per kilo, and the connectors I can print on my 3D printers at almost no cost because I produce my own filament.. so the costs of building the rigs can be neglected, besides the hardware cost.
