What is the best GPU mining setup?
For
-MH/s per dollar
-MH/s per dollar after factoring in 11 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity
-Most MH/s overall
-Best supplies (heat risers, etc.)

Also, would ~$100 be enough to buy a good chip or something?  How much have you invested in your rig?

Have you even seen the difficulty increase recently? With a $400 graphics card you might make $2 a day. Next month it will be $1.50, and then it's gonna get even lower as the ASIC's come online.

Right now investing in GPU mining is just real dumb.

Perhaps for BTC but have you checked out the alt coins lately... GPU farms are already switching to alternatives that ASIC's can't touch. I myself am planning on another GPU purchase in the coming days not for BTC mining tho...

For GPU mining a quad 7970 setup gives you 2.6 GH/s.
Right now im running dual 6990's and getting 1.2gh/s.
both of these GPU setups will cost about $1600 just for the GPU's
the 6990's you can run on lower grade MB's and CPU but they cant touch the Quad 7970's
the quad 7970 so far what i have found require a $260cpu and $260+ MB but the MB would be running a x16,x8,x8,x8 on the four PCIe 3.0

If you want to water cool the quad 7970's the whole rig will cost about $3200 the dual 6990's just stock cooling cost about $2300-2500 and you could water cool that rig and get up to 1.7GH/s but that would cost about $2900-3000 all depending on the parts you want.

My 6990 setup is:
AMD FX-8120
Asus M5A97 r2.0
Gigabyte ATI 6990 (x2)
Wifi card
128GB SSD
Coolermaster 1200w 80gold
Diskdrive (for driver CD's)
Corsair 600T
I also added 4 high pressure fins on the side panel

and if you pay 11c/kWh, why even be considering it?

i pay a little over 6 cents and make about $40 per ghash (per month), before including equipment depreciation and the value of my time

in about a week, that'll be 20-25% less

the 'best gpu mining setup', you wouldnt even take the cards out of the box.  you'd do rebates and sell some games, then resell the card as new in box on ebay.

get some 7790s, it has currently the best price/hashrate ratio and best power consumption/hashrate ratio:
https://suryarpraveen.wordpress.com/2013/04/23/amd-destroys-nvidia-at-bitcoin-mining-can-the-gap-ever-be-bridged/
If you have more money then go for 7950s.

The CPU I would use is an AMD Trinity or Richland APU. They are cheap and they can be used as an extra GPU. The A10-5800K gives about 114 MHash/s for Bitcoin mining, and about 70 kHash/s for Litecoin Mining with a TDP of 120 Watt. The new A10-6700 should be at same level or a bit above, but consumes less power. The A10-6800K should be even better but power consumption should be close to the A10-5800K.

7750s. Seem to be the most efficient.  Is LTC GPU mining a good investment now?  How much more will I make compared with bitcoin?

Wow, that's pretty good!  $40 and only 6 cents/kWh!
Is solar powered mining a better idea, to save power costs, then?

I looked up 7950s, they seem to be the best, even better than the 7970s.
What kind of MOBO should I use?

^^ that is correct

7790's are the best thing to buy right now, if you aren't taking pci-e slots into consideration

7950's will drop in price a lot more than 7790's.  7790's can do 300mhash on about 70 watts.  you can get some of the brands for less than $100 on newegg if you do the rebates and sell the games.

i've purchased a few (7790, 7850), mined for a month, then resold the card for profit even after ebay fee.  but that was about ... 6 weeks ago, when it was worth the effort

7790s vs 7750s?

hmm, I never tried a 7750.   I did buy one MSI 7770, it was $78 AR + Far Cry 3 & Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.  I gave away the Blood Dragons for free, but the Far Cry 3 game made me $15 on eBay, $13.50'ish or so after fees... so it ended up being about $65 for the 7770.  it's been going at 220mhash for about 50 days, i'll probably offload it the difficulty jump after next..

But $65 isn't much less than a 7790, since the 7790 comes with tomb raider + bioshock, (which used to be about $25, maybe $20 now?)....  about $20 more or so for the 7790 vs 7770

ed:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131477       ...  powercolor 7770 for $80 if you dont mind messing with a $30 rebate

What in the world, where did you find this old post?   GPU setups went the way of the Dodo for Bitcoin mining.  Now for Alternative coins it's fine but you get a totally different hash rate.
