I am holding both and most of the Crypto Holders do, I am holding Ethereum and over a dozen of Ethereum in a single wallet because they're all ERC20 and most of my coins are ERC20.
I hold my Ethereum because it is for gas purpose on trading in Etherdelta so Ethereum is also for converting into money.
I convert my Altcoins into Ethereum and Ethereum will be converted into money.. And that's how I always do.

I don't think selling Bitcoin to buy Ethereum is wise. Bitcoin is the best coin and in long term never let us down. Ethereum is very strong now, but I am afraid that Ethereum grow will slow down, because of the direct competition with NEO.

I prefer to hold both Ethereum and Bitcoin because  this two coins are the most widely use cryptocurrency in the market today. Bitcoin maybe volatile but if you are holding it for long term. volatility is not an issue.
