Can someone explain me what's the deal with posting PMs? I heard that people got banned for doing it and it looks like people don't like it (example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=255980.msg2727468#msg2727468) I can understand why it can be unfair/bad behavior but I don't get why it is that critical. Does it often lead to a ban?

AFAIK there's no restriction against doing it, why would there be? If you send someone a message they can do whatever they want with it.

There is no restriction against it. PM = Personal Message, not Private Message.

The words have different meanings, though. Compare "private interview" to "personal interview" or "private locker" to "personal locker". Something private isn't expected to be made public, but something personal is only owned by or associated with a single person, not necessarily with a strong guarantee of privacy.

I don't think anyone would like to find their PMs posted in public.
