[XPM] Working on a GPU miner for Primecoin

Its kind of silly that not only would you advertise that you are working on a GPU miner for primecoin, but also that people would donate for one to be made. This will defeat the whole concept of Primecoin, and the value will plummet

Today I got Reaper to generate prime chains on the CPU. However, it's still missing code that actually assembles and submits blocks. Once I get that working, I will start optimizing the CPU code. Once that's done, I will port the optimized code onto the GPU. At that point, I will be able to give speed estimates, and shortly after the beta will be ready for all you people who donated and will donate.

I think that's good. CPU miner will able to mine coin, so GPUminer doesn't scared people too much, the price will not be dump.

It is completely plausible that the initial testing of GPU mining is only slightly more efficient. Why cut out part of your processing power?

Well if you have a good CPU/GPU then you can double up.

A lot of people seem to be freaking out about GPU miners driving down the price of primecoins by driving up the supply rate. This is nonsense, GPU mining will not significantly increase the supply rate of primecoins and in the long run will make very little difference in the total mining rate.

Primecoin is designed to produce 1440 blocks a day on average, regardless of the processing power thrown at it (not entirely true, I'll explain in a bit). On top of that the number of coins per block goes down as 999 / d^2, where d is the difficulty. So for d = 7 each block gives 20.39 coins, d = 8: 15.61, d = 9: 12.33, d = 10: 9.99. The difficulty will be going up to 9 within a day most likely. The minting rate is going down and will continue to do so even after GPU miners are released because the supply rate does not depend on processing power (mostly).

Now for the disclaimer. The algorithm dynamically adjust for the amount of processing power and if there is a spike if will need to play catchup. During the catchup phase more than 1440 blocks will be generate a day on average. you can see this in the cryptometer link. The number of blocks is creeping down to 1440 after the initial spike.

What will change when gpu miners are released? Assuming the gpu miners are much more efficient than cpu miners then people running gpu miners will generate more coins than people running cpu miners. On average the coins are found in direct proportion to the share of the total processing power you have. Lets say you have 1% of the total mining power then on average you would mine 1 out of every 100 blocks or 1440/100 = 14.4 blocks a day. So if you are running a gpu miner that has 10 times the primecoin mining power as a cpu then you will get 10 times more blocks on average.

TL;DR GPU mining will not increase the rate at which primecoins are mined. There will be no flood of coins.

1) The increased pps multiplier isn't going to be worth my 5BTC donation if it's only 2x time faster than CPU - so we need to at least have some clue.
2) There are people already releasing CUDA miners and they may be able to release it before this, which will give you zero advantage as Primecoin client will auto-adjust difficulty very quickly when a spike happens, so the short window of profit is gone when all GPU miners jump in.
3) While I have no issue trusting the OP, we still have nothing to look at to even consider donation or not, at this stage donation is pure gamble on thin air IMHO.

Yeah I'm still hell bent on LTC being on Gox as more likely than making tons of money on a XPM GPU miner. I can't see the technology, as stated, being "that" much better for Open CL than the HP6 miner for CPU. The way XPM mining works and all the research I have gathered on GPU mining development is telling me that getting a GPU to mine XPM will likely be faster than CPU mining, but not much faster.

Something akin to a 20 armed ogre trying to crack eggs. He'll mess up and crush a lot of eggs before getting maybe 2 in the pan, where as a human (cpu miner) can simply cook the 1 egg consistently. Terrible analogy. TERRIBLE. But you get the point. Stream processors were not made for dis sh%t--until we find out they were, and many of us were wrong all the time.

It can definitely be done. It's simply a matter of how skilled the programmer is.
