Having lurked in your threads I find myself entirely ill equipped and my ignorance outright embarrasses me within this field and so onto my request or should I say plea.

I only ask you to suggest a book that I should read and if it please you feel free to give a little explanation or in deed a long one.

The ones most mentioned I shall read first and I shall keep the list below updated.

Having  finished writing this on word  and on  account of my irritating dyslexia  It  took me considerably more effort than is proportional to the task and as I prepared to cut and paste what do I find but a similar thread right at the top.

Well, Now I HAVE to write 1884 as a Steampunk version of 1984, so.. yes, do read that when I'm done.

In the meantime, let me reiterate my suggestion of Alongside Night. (a google search, or clicking the link I posted in the other book thread will get you a free PDF copy)

You had Orwell's Nineteen-eighty-four already there. I didn't like it much, although it is a definite must-read. Another must-read in the same genre is Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Well, that was an interesting book...

I can double-up the recommendation of 1984.

I agree with 1984 and Brave New World and also suggest Animal Farm by George Orwell and Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Alongside Night is good, though the author is a hypocritical fascist
1984 and Brave New World are good, too.

If you take non-fiction, two very good books to go for are Socialism by Ludwig Von Mises and Human Action by LVM (though Human Action is an absurdly long book and a bit hard to read, so you might want to go for it after Socialism). Also, Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto are interesting, especially if followed up by Atlas Shrugged (put the two together and they could probably generate some friction).

Anyway, good fiction not already offered. Hmm.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is good. An obscure but great (if you can find it) book would be Time Will Run Back by Harry Hazlitt. Oh, and Withur We, a book I found online in PDF format, is pretty damn good too and comes with the bonus of being free (though you have to read it on a computer if you don't buy it).
