Having lurked in your threads I find myself entirely ill equipped and my ignorance outright embarrasses me within this field and so onto my request or should I say plea.

I only ask you to suggest a book that I should read and if it please you feel free to give a little explanation or in deed a long one.

The ones most mentioned I shall read first and I shall keep the list below updated.

Books I should go out and read:

1984, George Orwell  x 4
( This was a single number response to a thread of mine and I thank you pinjas) Wink

Aldous Huxley's Brave New World x 3

Alongside Night, J. Neil Schulman x 2
http://www.alongsidenight.net/

The Rational Optimist, Matt Ridley x 1

Boundaries of Order, Butler Schafer x 1
http://mises.org/books/boundaries.pdf

Animal Farm, George Orwell x 1

Farenheit 451, Ray Bradbury x 1

The Creature from Jekyl Island

Homage to Catalonia - George Orwell

Anthem - Ayn Rand

Agrarian Justice - Thomas Paine

The Road to Serfdom - Friedrich A. Hayek

Freakonomics - Steven D. Levitt

Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar - James Marcus Bach

1984 Steampunk version, myrkul (Realise  date unknown) Cool
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sure I am not alone and I hope this thread will enlighten others as I hope it to enlighten myself.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having  finished writing this on word  and on  account of my irritating dyslexia  It  took me considerably more effort than is proportional to the task and as I prepared to cut and paste what do I find but a similar thread right at the top. Undecided

I’m going to post it anyway and let it die if it must but I will take responsibility of maintaining the list that I promise you.

Well, Now I HAVE to write 1884 as a Steampunk version of 1984, so.. yes, do read that when I'm done.

In the meantime, let me reiterate my suggestion of Alongside Night. (a google search, or clicking the link I posted in the other book thread will get you a free PDF copy)

Here's another book thread from where you probably can find few ideas: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=22955.0

You had Orwell's Nineteen-eighty-four already there. I didn't like it much, although it is a definite must-read. Another must-read in the same genre is Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Well, that was an interesting book...

"The Rational Optimist" by Matt Ridley was one of my life-changers.

I can double-up the recommendation of 1984.

I agree with 1984 and Brave New World and also suggest Animal Farm by George Orwell and Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Alongside Night is good, though the author is a hypocritical fascist
1984 and Brave New World are good, too.

If you take non-fiction, two very good books to go for are Socialism by Ludwig Von Mises and Human Action by LVM (though Human Action is an absurdly long book and a bit hard to read, so you might want to go for it after Socialism). Also, Das Kapital and the Communist Manifesto are interesting, especially if followed up by Atlas Shrugged (put the two together and they could probably generate some friction).

Anyway, good fiction not already offered. Hmm.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is good. An obscure but great (if you can find it) book would be Time Will Run Back by Harry Hazlitt. Oh, and Withur We, a book I found online in PDF format, is pretty damn good too and comes with the bonus of being free (though you have to read it on a computer if you don't buy it).

You're standing on a flagstone running with blood, alone and so very lonely because you can't choose but you had to

Wait, what?!?

Had some chats with him. He isn't especially principled and turned into a raving statist loon the instant I started talking about Israel.

But then, maybe there is something I am missing on that.

Ah well. L. Neil Smith Rails against copyright until it's his work that gets copied.

I almost forgot: Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig (non-fiction). It's free to download from www.free-culture.cc ( which appears to be down  Huh so here's an alternate link) but you can also buy it if you wish.

Against Intellectual Monopoly: http://www.micheleboldrin.com/research/aim.html (appropriately, the authors offer it online for free)
Interesting challenge to what is commonly termed intellectual property (trademarks, patents, etc.); why we don't necessarily need it and why it probably is very bad and counterproductive.

You and the State: http://www.amazon.com/You-State-Introduction-Political-Philosophy/dp/0742548449
Good introduction to political philosophy from an anarcho-capitalist perspective.
