Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

what is your consideration to say like that?
I think your prediction is different from me, remember that I'm sure bitcoin will rise in early 2018, spreading and volume increases, big investors increase. and a good bitcoin system will occur in 2018.

if nobody knows about how to get into the wallet (password, private key, etc.) these BTC are gone, nobody can get it.
That's why if you hold a good amount of BTC you should have trusted friend or family member to have all the information to recover your coins, but this would happen also for your bank account, when you're gone everything's coming with you, in the /dev/null Smiley

These Bitcoin are lost permanently. It is not (and shouldn't be) possible to access or recover Bitcoin from a wallet without knowing the private key & password.
There are many people who have lost access to their wallets for several reasons, and thus can no longer access the Bitcoins that they may have held in the past.
This is why everyone should take precautions such as backups and entrusting the private key to a trustworthy person.

Nothing will happen to the BTC unless some one else knows the password of your wallet and has access to your account and know how it works. A layman won't be able to do anything with BTC even if he/she has access to your wallet or account. You can ask someone to be your caretaker and teach them to use BTC.

Most probably he will take it to his grave and the btc he has will be gone with him as well not unless a great hacker could hack his wallet address. It will stay where he has it secured and if he has not told anyone about it then yes it is considered dead too.

good joke, you knew that in the earliest times there were cultures that where when someone died, they buried this person with their belongings.

This is a very serious concern. When someone dies it becomes something very problematic because besides the lack that this person gives us we have to deal with the goods that this person who died left. the banks take a lot of time to give the insurance values and there are more others bureaucracies involved. If you want someone to benefit from your bitcoin after your death, this person needs to know that you have bitcoin, your password and private keys. But you do it this movement (tell someone that you have X bitcoin, give your password, give your private key) you are at risk of being robbed. Unfortunately in today's world even the person you love the most in the world can fool and steal you. So the question you should have is:

when is someone trustworthy enough to give pasword and private keys?

There is a possibility that a bitcoin holder may have died of 100BTC. If I have such a large amount of money I will let my parent know my account and password, private key, etc and what they will do for this money will leave me a note on how they will be able to allocate this money and this way I'm happy even when I'm dead or so madly. It can help your parents and your children if you have a family. Hopefully I will not have 100 Bitcoin so I will not die. just i think

That is good question I think that dev should make   some kinda of wallet deactivation after few years of no transactions or inactivity ,and distribute them in community. I think that would be fair.

well, if you have a nominee it works, otherwise if banks "really wants" to find somebody to send the money in the account it's a long process and is not free.
happened to a friend of mine when his dad died, there was no nominee and even though he demonstrated to be his son, the account was locked for ages, he needed a lawyer to be able to unlock the fonds in it.
That's at least what can happen in my home country.

There you have it. You just answered your own question. It is obviously useless if none of the family member knows about how to recover his bitcoins. So to prevent this from happening make a small diary and put all your info about bitcoin there incase you die with that 100btc.

he was talking about some greedy person who could farm that much and not share with family ( I can kinda relate to this story but nwm) anyway I wrote in previous post a idea about its distribution.

If no one is aware about it then its really gone for good with the deceased.Eventhough private keys and back ups are suppose to be the topmost secret its advisable to atleast give backup to your closest relation just incase of any uncertainties

if you don't own 100BTC yourself then you don't need to worry about those who do have that much. because someone who owns $1,600,000-$1,700,000 with the potential to be worth $2 mil, will surely know what to do with it and has made the arrangements already. unless they are ignorant of their family or if they think they have bitcoin nodes in afterlife too Wink

If such a situation prevails this will go unused until an user has informed to a person who is a relative to him or the one who is close to him. The value gets added to the total number of bitcoin into circulation. This won't affect the growth of the cryptocurrency network.

If someone dies then we need the private key of his wallet to access the bitcoin or else there is now way to use it.it will be buried with the owner.

Yes this is what I understand, once the person dies and no one knows his personal or private keys of all his wallet. Obviously no one can access the wallet and cannot transfer to anyone unless atleast one person knows all his private keys.

I started to get curious also. Maybe his earnings will be stock in his wallet because he cannot be or hard to traced due to his anonymously. It will be better if someone close to him or his relative knows his wallet and transfer the coins to them after because its to useless if it was only stocked there for good.

Then the whole amount of BTC which he had will be locked forever in his private key because there is no nominee contract in blockchain. check out this thread of mine which explains how many bitcoins have been lost merely due to such things. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2466779.msg25267961#msg25267961

Well, it is sad to die. Also the BTC will die and wont recover if theres none knows how to recover your accounts, passwords etc.

I need to know that if a bitcoin holder dies with 100btc. Then what happended to btc ? Useless
If family member knows no problem. What if not
Well.... So the bitcoin will be dead too with the owner if there are no people who know about the private key of the bitcoin forever and i think it is good due to about 100 bitcoin was gone and the price will always keep increasing or at least the price of bitcoin will be stable due to the dumpers of bitcoin with 100 bitcoin is gone, that is the problem for their families but i think it is good for the price of the bitcoin to be more expensive in the future.

It will be lost but most likely no one will know they are lost. The maximum number of Bitcoins will be 21 million but there are lost coins, some of which are known, but many lost coins no one knows about. It's hard to say how much if an impact this will have on price, but if these coins are never going to be sold, then the supply is basically lower because of it.

If you have Bitcoins that you are holding, I recommend that you leave instructions on how to recover them with your spouse or other family members. You could leave this in your will or in a safe deposit box where they will find it if you die.

Well in that case a  million of dollars would just get wasted and literally freeze .
Bitcoin does not work like banks and never look into other wallets which are frozen for years . That would just stay there for the time to come . That would be best in that case to give out  some wallet information to someone you love and you can trust . There is  no better way to to deal with it.

We can ask the same about paper money but it can be reprinted so problem is easily solved. In bitcoin no but lets' imagine. There is 16M bitcoin and totally worth 100 Billion. Now we lost 4 bitcoin, all holdets died and we can use only 12M bitcoin and number of people who uses bitcoin grew again. Now what happens here is that price of bitcoin rises and 12M's total worth can become 100 Billion or more too. If in past it could worth 85Billion, now they worth 100.

well that bitcoin holders is totally idiot if the family members didn't know all information about the wallet . But i think if bitcoin holders has 100btc i think he will never let the 100btc staying in any online wallets maybe he will convert it into fiat and put it on bank to ensure that the 100btc will never be useless after bitcoin holders die.  And also after the owner die perhaps the bank company will let the wife or the families manage the account .And for sure the family knows about the money of the deceased so i think they will supervise the papers immediatly to transfer the name to the spouse or children

Then nothing can be happened, so if the person which is having a single bitcoin should trust his family member or friends and tell them about it and all the private thing related to it so after it they could use that coin.

Better share your crypto private key with your most trusted person or family member. They must be well informed or else your crypto will still stay in the blockchain forever.

If the bitcoiner dies in his wallet there is 100 btc and his family no one knows, then the bitcoin automatically includes hidden treasure and nobody can pick it up. So can say the bitcoin is gone and burned for good.
so for that we have to tell our power if we jump in bitcoin and write important notes on other devices that can be saved and later can be opened for our family.

It has not yet cross my mind, but if a holder of bitcoin dies without any of his family member knowing next to nothing about bitcoin then that coin will lost forever. So I think we should let our family understand the principle of blockchain and have our login particulars and keys.

Why is Bitcoin any different than anything else? If you hide gold coins or gold bars somewhere and you tell nobody, then it

is gone. Yes, someone might find the gold by accident, somewhere in the future... but with Bitcoin this is nearly impossible.

You should tell family and friends about these bitcoins in advance... but only the ones that would be the beneficiaries.  Wink

indeed death comes no one knows. the questions above are good, it gives us all the vigilance to anticipate those things happening to us. if no one knows about Bitcoin then the bitcoin he has no meaning anymore.

What do you mean? The next generation? Do you know of what are you talking about? Or you are just writing in here with non-sense?

If the holder dies, then the wallet will be there forever, the balance that you have is never going to know if you died or not.

And if the children from the holder doesn't know the private key, there not going to be able to access to those funds.

It could no longer be accessed unless they shared their wallet credentials to someone they know so sharing it with trusted individuals such as trusted family members would be a good idea.

That is not important that a person will sell all their bitcoins but i think that it is too much important that a person should share his account information with their family member so that after his death his family can get access to his wallet and can get the inherit. In fact no one ever expect that he will die and that is the reason that he never take it serious to share its account information with anyone of his family member.

Haha very interesting. That bitcoin is completely gone for good since nobody knows about the private key and password. It would be prudent however to at least entrust such details to trusted person before the unexpected happens

If you died with 100 bitcoin on your wallet and you haven't told it with your last testament / will then it will be gone forever. Not really it will be gone forever, it will remain on your wallet without someone knows how to claim it.

But if you'll give information, private keys, login details & password if it was stored on a web wallet then he might gain access and use it for their own good.

Otherwise if you died in an accident without letting them know those details that will be likely to be called burned bitcoin

This was spoken about before in a large thread, I am not sure where it has gone since though.

You need to keep your privatekeys with a family member at their house. This is good for security because you have a backup position incase your house burns down or whatever the case is. If you die a family member can simply use your private key and get the bitcoin back.

I think everything will be useless, so if you're married, then you should share your account with your partner, I've never thought of that before. But now maybe we should not hold it alone, we divide because if it is gone, your child and your partner can not enjoy it. Thanks for the question btw.

Unlike banks, you can't set someone as nominee for your account. but if a person has 100 BTC that is around 2 million USD, obviously he will generate keys and secure that somewhere, you don't have to worry about that  Cheesy

Worrying about your death well you need to teach anyone from your family about bitcoin and it's basic technicality. While you are alive make a tutorial and it's good if it will be written and has instructions on it so whenever you died it can be given to them through your attorney.

If the holder didn't explain their family or loved ones how to deal with Bitcoins, they will be forgotten.

Here there is a good article with simple tips to be sure that this is not going to happen, better to make a bit effort and be sure Bitcoins don't get lost in the space with no one knowing about their existence: https://bravenewcoin.com/news/inheritance-planning-for-cryptocurrencies-3-steps-in-3-minutes/

Could there be a smart contract for this? You'd be able to store whatever inside a vault and it will trigger a sequence of actions upon your death, such as sending a message to your relatives containing public and private keys. The problem is, how will it be triggered? You'd need to trust a 3rd party to send the message if and only if you died.

It's a problem. A lot of crypto is lost because its owners died. Of course a wallet key can be written is bequest, but there is another tool. There is a service called Mywish that is based on smart contracts. It lets you send crypto to anyone if a condition (for instance, if a wallet is not active for a year that looks like owner's death) is completed.

Even if the family know about it, they may not have the corresponding codes, account and necessary knowledge to get it back.
That's one of the issue about bitcoin but actually.. For the moment there is no solution.

I guess the best that can be done is tell someone about it. Someone you know in real life and someone you really think you can trust.

Dear team

I need to know that if a bitcoin holder dies with 100btc. Then what happended to btc ? Useless
If family member knows no problem. What if not

LOL, im sure someone with 100btc that knows about it, would at least make basic preparations for passing it on. but if they didnt, effectively these coins are out of circulation. Most paper wallets only last so long, and even if a hardware wallet is used, its not indestructable. so there is the potential for discovery while the wallet is is still accessible; after that, they are out of the loop (at least until someone starts cracking private keys with next generation processors) Smiley

it may happen, bitcoin can not be taken because the bitcoin holders die and the family no one knows. before it all happens it's good to hire a lawyer. if the bitcoin holder dies, bitcoin can be transferred to the heir.

then the 100 btc is still there in wallet and it will not recover if the family did not know his/her password or private key, we should tell our trusted family members to know our private key or password just in case.

If the family doesn't have access to private then it will be lost. It will still stay in the wallet but lost for the family to retrieve them. Interestingly, with every fork the wallet will also get their share of the new forked coins.

the bitcoin will sit in his wallet till the end of the bitcoin, or until someones hacks in and gets them. It's better for someone with a nice amount of btc to leave something in writing behind, like the password and all the security details. and if the amount of bitcoins is even bigger, at least the market won't react because of those coins

we never know what will happen in the future. so if something happens that will be very fatal. as you say, then by telling one of the families you trust is the best way.

I think if the bitcoin holder dies the coins that they have will probably gone because they are only one who can access it. In addition to that, if they pass it in their son or daughter I think the bitcoin that they will still in their wallet because they can access it.

If the btc holder dies without passing any information about their btc to the nearest family member all the btc will stay as unused as a frozen coin.Unless a hacker hack in a steal the coins it remains as it is.If you want your family to enjoy the profit even after you pass away it is better you pass your private key information to someone you trust from your family so that they can use it even after you are gone.Or maintain the records in your safe locker for your family to use.

This question is itself a question in his own way , Because if any person have such a big amount than surely he will not remain hide to his family and also he will no more hide to Thier trusted person , with such a big amount he will surely tell to their memeber that how you're this big amount because to earn bitcoin in bulk amount is not a easy task , so surely he will expose to his family .
Here I myself have a friend in another city ( 1000 km far from my house ) since I have not yet meet face to face but still I know he is trust and I told him that when I got died then please get my private key from my place ( secret in online ) and sell them for money .

These are those possible chance if the holder of a coin will hold forever
  • The number of supply was too low and if the demand was high, the value of a coin was pump and pump until the supply use their coin to circulate the price of bitcoin that can cause to dump bitcoin.
  • It is like the whales.  Whales must have a 10 million to 100 million coins. The Whale those control the price of the coins on market.
  • The supply was getting low because they cannot copy a piece of bitcoin
  • The coin was not circulate like the bitcoin of Satoshi Nakamoto, the founder of Bitcoin. He has a million Bitcoin that's why almost million of bitcoin does not circulate
  • The coin was being trash

Every coin can affect the price by its coin and also the value of another coin.

if the owner of the dead bitcoin is likely his wealth is still stored in the market or other because no one knows the private key that belongs to him unless we use an official letter for withdrawal of funds.

If the bitlocker holder dies without leaving anyone with information about passwords and secret keys to access these bits, they remain encrypted in the blockchein block chain. However, we can not say that they disappear forever. They stay there until someone chooses a digital password and opens access to them. While such a technological opportunity does not exist. However, quantum computers may soon appear that can pick up digital keys of any complexity, including, to my knowledge, passwords of this level of complexity. That is, in the future there will be an opportunity to gain access to lost bitkoynam. However, this new technology poses a potential threat to the safe existence of crypto currency. How to solve this problem, while it is difficult to say.

If anybody the holder trusts gave the private key or the passphrase or the password into his/her bitcoin then that person can withdraw it and convert it into fiat money. If the holder doesn't gave its private key to anybody, its either someone who knows about bitcoin will search in his/her device where he/she logs in his/her account or if nobody can then that bitcoin will be lost FOREVER.

Of course no one can touch it. It can't be mined or be owned by someone. Although it can be hacked. Aside from that there is no way it can be used it will be lost forever.

i've read in the past that a dude made a certain script that sort of asks the owner if he's alive like every month. and if he didn't reply after a few months, the keys would automatically be sent to a certain relative. cool stuff.

the bitcoin will be staying in the wallet unless his family know the private keys and know how to use it. but if there is no one knows then the bitcoin cannot be used by every people although he knows the address. I think if we want to give our bitcoin, we need to give all info that we have to someone then they can get access to our wallet and maybe they can use it for good things.

if nobody knows about how to get into the wallet (password, private key, etc.) these BTC are gone, nobody can get it.
That's why if you hold a good amount of BTC you should have trusted friend or family member to have all the information to recover your coins, but this would happen also for your bank account, when you're gone everything's coming with you, in the /dev/null Smiley
Absolutely!!

It's prudent to keep a trustworthy person as your secret keeper. Otherwise all your wealth is gone!!

Hence something we do must be known by our families that we believe because when something happens to us at least the family can know and find a solution, as well as bitcoin, if bitcoin holder dies then the bitcoin can not be used unless there is a family or heirs who know the username and trading account password of the dead holder.

What you will do If you inverse in any Market trading??
You will share the knowledge of that to your family members and friends Right. So as like that you need to inform to your family members about bitcoin investment .Because you had invested the hard earned money in Bitcoin.Even if you die, your son or daughter will use of that bitcoin for their expenditure in future.

That would be very unfortunate situation cause with the death of the bitcoin holder there also comes the "death" of the wallet. If the user has not stored his private key anywhere or trusted his wallet belongings to anyone the wallet will be forever lost in the wastes of the internet. If someone has a lot of the Bitcoins the best thing would be to share his private key with someone of importance, maybe not the private key but the storage of the private key. The best thing would be paper storage for the private key.

If family member knows no problem. What if not
If the bitcoin holder dies, that was a very defficult to happen but maybe there will be a substitute for it.maybe when thats happened there is someone to continue bitcoin.if theres someone that has a lots of account the best thing to do is share their private key to someone who was responsible also to bitcoin or i mean, one of the stock holder.

Since all bitcoin a person have is secured by private keys, nobody will have an access to it and probably be useless. Unless, that person shared his private key to a trusted relative or friend then it will be accessible and will be in use.

I don't even understand the whole controversy in the issue of someone dies with btc. Of course nothing will happen. Its just like a normal human being who kept his fund in a hole that is only known to him then he dies, nothing will happen to the money other than it rusting away but in the case of bitcoin, we see its in the wallet, but no one can access it. Just as simple as that.

Well to access you wallet you need a Private key and password. As Name is displayed "private" which mean its your personal info and not share with any one. If no one know the password, your private and you dies. Then nobody can access your wallet. It will waste forever. Better to share your key and password with anyone you can trust maybe your spouse .

No one will ever have access to that 100 bitcoins. It's virtually gone forever unless someone actually knows the encryption password or if it's easily accessible to any other family member. I doubt any family member would even give a damn about his/her wallet so better to inform them the worth of those bitcoins.

Well, if he has not shared the private keys with anyone, then the coins will be lost and no one will be able to retrieve them (at least with the current technology). If some one could find the recovery sheet, backups, or even hints for passwords, then there is a chance that the coins could be recovered and transferred to the relatives.

Why will you say something like that, if one is I'll, he will have to sell his precious coins for his life, cause when there is life then there is hope. The bitcoin will not be touched if it is in a hardware wallet, but if it is not, then it will be a place for the price to be at a high price, except some of his family members has the details of it.

The Law Society is urging people to leave clear instructions for their intellectual property and digital media in case of death. Most of the digital legacy people leave behind when they shuttle off this mortal coil has sentimental value – it is not something that can be appraised or valued in hard cash.

If no one has access to their funds via private key etc then the funds are lost forever. That is one of the benefits and also one of the downsides of bitcoin. It is why all should be sure to be sensible and make copies of private keys and leave them either in secure places or with family members they can trust.

If the person has a 100 bitcoin and he died the bitcoin is useless you can't claim and convert it into a local currency because maybe the wallet has a password or need a private key to access it unless if your family know your password or private they can use it to buy things that they want or to use it of emergency and if the day has come and you know to yourself that you're dying tell to your family  ypu private key as soon as possible

Family can be your worst enemy in some cases. Everything that involves a lot money changes people from good to bad instantly in certain situations. If you need the money badly, and see that you have access to x number of coins, for a lot people that will be an easy choice and option. If you want your family to at least have something, set up a fiat fund, or one that you can include a fair number of coins in. This all will get released once you're gone, and investigation has turned out that you have died naturally, and not poisoned or whatever by greedy family members. It's quite complicated, but every person will deal with it on its own way.

They will be lost in the BLockchain forever. I think that happens a lot with early Bitcoin Users. And that will happen in the Future too. SO if the family members dont know his passwort and cant find the private keys, the coins are lost.

If a person owns 100 BTC holders that unfortunately passed away without leaving any information, then I think all of BTC which will forever not be traded anymore. If in case the owner of the BTC to the entire information about the e-wallet and stored somewhere, it can members of the family may own, even if they do not disclose the information to anyone, then no one can use that number BTC.

Yes it will be useless as no one knows anything about it even its password or key to his/her wallet. Thats the reason why we should keep it as a secret to someone who is close to us so that our money will have value and be worthy. If someone know your private keys then there is someone who can used it whenever you die.

They will be lost permanently unless the holder wrote down his wallet's private key and kept it with someone he trusted so he can then access the fortune after the holder dies. It's kinda risky to give away your private key but thats the only way for people get your bitcoins after you're gone.

If you do not have a private key, you will not get access to the wallet. For this reason, smart people, I think, duplicate their secret keys and store them in bank cells.

I need to know that if a bitcoin holder dies with 100btc. Then what happended to btc ? Useless
If family member knows no problem. What if not
if it really happens then the bitcoin that he has will be lost and make the supply decreases. so to avoid that we should give our personal wallet's key to the person we trust or write it in the will.

Hi there udayantha11! You got a point in there. If a man with a bank account dies and no one withdraw his money in the bank until to the point the bank close his account, the money will go directly to the bank. In the case of bitcoin, when the bitcoin is stored in an online wallet and the wallet provider notice that the bitcoin is never been touch or no activity from the user for about so many year. I think the wallet company will acquire the bitcoins. And for the lesson, be sure that one of your family or relatives knew that you have bitcoins.  Wink

If he stored it in an online wallet, it will be the same case as the banks do. If they noticed that his account have been not active for so many years his money in his account will be acquired by the bank. That's the same with online wallet. But if he's using a hardware wallet and he's the only one who knows his private key then it will be a lost bitcoin forever unless someone gained access to his hardware wallet and cracked his private key.

If nobody knows about it then its gone. Might be good to leave it as part of a will.

I agree, you can leave it as part of a will so that it won't be useless. Or, be open to your family, you can trust to them you're btc account or else your btc will be gone in just a snap. Another idea comes to my mind is to add a feature on bitcoin that allows us to add a contact person which automatically received a message whenever the bitcoin account was not accessed in a month or 2.

although it is difficult to give trust to other people, it is for our own good and this is our family. we should take care of them and make sure that our family can stay alive and survive. if we can share what we have especially we can tell to them that we have bitcoin and we teach them how to use it then I think it will be good for us if someday before we died, we can give our bitcoin as the legacy so they can continue what we start.

It would typically mean that there is less supply circulating which would help increase demand.

Without the keys then they would be lost forever. I think it is becoming ever more wiser to include your crypto currencies in a will or have other people trusted and close to you knowing how to access them if something was to happen.

There is no way to know for sure, but I suspect that there is a lot of Bitcoin locked-up / lost this way - also people just losing access to private keys etc. It is not the easiest thing to leave Bitcoin in a will because you would need a trusted lawyer not to "disappear" the funds.

I suspect there are good solutions available for this in the community

In my opinion you should search new ways to hack his/her wallet. At the moment is seems very hard but if there would be a lots of btc`s and if you have a clue about the wallet there may be a possibility.

if nobody knows about how to get into the wallet (password, private key, etc.) these BTC are gone, nobody can get it.
That's why if you hold a good amount of BTC you should have trusted friend or family member to have all the information to recover your coins, but this would happen also for your bank account, when you're gone everything's coming with you, in the /dev/null Smiley
No you are wrong here banks have a field for nominee ,so if you dead the funds goes to that person already mentioned at the time of opening a account.

Yes he is wrong, In my country you could even get a court mandated order to go round all banks check if they have an account in that name and state the balance, once the person is confirmed dead and without a will.

then it will be stocked into its wallet. It will be a big factor in the market since bitcoin has a high demand in its name. I recommend to those who hold a high amount of bitcoin to make sure that a family member whom you want to benefit from your savings knew about your wallet and your password.

If bitcoin holder dies there may be two effects. firstly if he/she share about bitcoin to any of his family member or friend they may find his account details from his laptop and use the Bitcoin. secondly If he/she did not share about bitcoin with any one than bit coin will remain in wallet but no one can use it.

you must notify the nearest family, or heirs. if you do not, bitcoin will be processed by the company owner of the wallet. yes that will be the case.

As we all know BTC is an asset for the planet and now people started saving BTC for their children but if the owner dies suddenly, then his earned BTC would be prossed to the BTC owner wallet but the things could be better if a person knows that he is about to die, then he can share his BTC account details to his closest one and then he can use BTC account as a heir. But if no one knows about your BTC, and u dies then ur BTC will be lost.
