I have a pretty fast CPU in one of my mining rigs so I was wondering:
Which one would be more profitable across time: using that CPU power to mine quarkcoin or to mine primecoin? I realize that primecoin has the added benefit of having a scientific benefit with regard to prime numbers (and that is why I am mining it right now), but it just occurred to me that perhaps quarkcoin would be more profitable.

Thanks for any insight Smiley

For me, personally, QRK is more profitable in that the payouts are steadier, about 0.01 BTC worth per hour.

Your mileage may vary.

The current difficulty ~250ish can be solo mined still?

Yes, and try giving it a few days to get a good average.

Oh and remember everyone, block reward halving in about three weeks.

What processor(s) are you using that are worth 0.01BTC per hour?

Thanks

Actually, with 600kh/s (worth of LTC mining) mining at Quark now, I got 1/60 of the total reward(on a long period, difficulty average ~300).
The network is then ~40Mh/s
The total mined per day is 2*60*24*2048*0.000003 = 17.7 BTC.
And mining LTC with 40Mh/s gives 1.3 BTC per day at current difficulty.

The profitablility of quark is then 17.7/1.3 = 1360% of LTC (or 2700% of BTC).
So if you can, you should mine it !

I have done the same math for primecoin a few days ago and I think with the fall in price, it must be now around ~500% more profitable than LTC.

You do realize that quarkcoin is only CPU mineable? You are mining litecoin with your GPU(s) but you cannot mine quarkcoin with them, you must use a CPU (I believe). Therefore, your calculation makes zero sense because because you have presumed that you can use GPUs to mine quarkcoin. If I am incorrect and you can use your GPU to mine quarkcoin, please tell me how. Otherwise, all of your calculations are wrong.

Please advise, thank you

No, I don't have GPU's, only CPUs.
My calculation of the 600kh/s comes from the hashrate shown by the cpuminer for LTC.

Edit : I don't have 600kh/s in fact, only 300kh/s after verification, so network must be about 20Mh/s and profitability is more about 2700% of LTC(and 5400% of BTC)

Oh ok thanks. Gotcha (my mistake). Wow, you must have a lot of CPUs. However, I am only mining with GPUs so I cannot use them for quarkcoin. I have only one processor (i7 3770k) and was wondering what to point that at. Quarkcoin will always be more profitable then litecoin in CPU land because people only use GPUs for litecoin so a CPU has no chance of doing anything. With quarkcoin, it is competing against other CPUs.

Thanks.

QRK is very difficult to mine right now, but the price is also extremely low.

I just tried mining it again and after 6 hours with a i5-3570k @ 4.4Ghz I only found 1 block.

Hmmm ok thanks Smiley. THat is still better than XPM right now I think. I am on ypool and with my i7 across the last 10 hours I earned 0.003 BTC.

I heard that ypool isn't profitable, because prime checking by design. The most profitable way to prime is solo mining, but rewards are so rare... Got 2 blocks @1,5k pps during 15 days, it seems that I have good luck.

Wow, that is good luck! I guess I'll go back to either solo mining XPM or Quark, I'll pick one at random.

I'm mining QRK with 1 x smallest droplet on Digital Oceon (45,000 hashpersec) , averaging 2 blocks a day over the last 7 days.

For Primecoin in running 4 thread on a Xeon E5-1650 @ 3.60Ghz (50% load) getting 1800 pps / 0.9 chainsperday. No blocks for 6 days. Sad
