Why divide $1000 only to two altcoins? There is a lot of good altcoins with great potential. Diversification is a king. For me it's  necessary to HODL LTC, ETH, XMR, LSK, POWR, WAVES, VTC, GRS. And invest some ETH to some well selected ICOs too.

I agree with you. Diversification of risks is better. Top 10 or Top 20 of coins almost all of them are gonna be a good investment.

That amount of money can certainly buy a huge volume of coins especially those coins that are in low price at this time. If you really want to invest that money, I recommend to you altcoins that are listed in bittrex exchange redcoin and ptoy. Two good altcoin for longterm investment in my opinion is Power Ledger and AION. Power Ledger project supported by Australian goverment and has working product in some country like Australia, New Zealand and India. And AION has unique project that would like to connect between different blockchain. In my prediction these 2 altcoin will hge in 2018 and the price will continue increasing.

Ethereum would be the best altcoin that you can invest. It's price is stable but continously increasing, slowly. And this altcoin is the basis of majority of the smart contracts, so it has a tendency to rise soon. The other altcoin that I would recommend is ADB they have a good platform and a striving team. LTC, ETH, XMR, i only have to choose this three altcoins for my own reason, first transactions fees are too low, fast and reliable, 2nd has more hodlers that are circulating around on its own blockchain, 3rd constantly slow price pump for a long term, not like in bitcoin, bitcoin now has to be correct because of its fastest grow and rapidly price rocketing in just 2 months from $3k upto its current price now.

I think you should be okay with Ethereum or Litecoin as well as several other altcoins. The best advice I can give is to put together a portfolio that includes several of the top altcoins. You can also do some research to find some other less well known altcoins that you think will eventually be successful. This way you don’t have to get lucky with just two coin that will do well.

Ethereum (Eth) and Monero (XMR)

Transaction fees are still too low and transactions get confirmed really quick unlike the present scenario with Bitcoins. Moreover, Ethereum and Monero has a vast user-circle. They have a great potential.

I am mining Ethereum these days with my 280x and 290x, there was a time when I could mine 0.5 Ethereum per day 

I will always support Ethereum because it brought the whole crypto market to the next level. I am confident that it will soon be touching $1000 per coin mark. Then you have a number of projects that will only make Ethereum better.

Moreover, Ethereum will not be left out as long as tokens are still in trading and new tokens are still popping up which makes it even stronger every day.

After bitcoins, Eth and XMR are next strongest coin in the market respectively.
