In my own view bitcoin is the number one since it is only bitcoin that has a fiat exchanger all over the world. Also bitcoin is the only cryptocurrency that is used to purchase or trade with all other altcoins. Though Ethereum, Monero, Doge, Litecoin and Dash can be used but there are exchanges that only accepts bitcoin and none other.

You raise an interesting point about defining 'number one' and you're right that other cryptos will have other specific functions that they do better.

But I think being 'number 1' refers generally to how well accepted/ known/ traded a coin is- and that's Bitcoin without exception. It will be a long time until another crypto catches BTC in terms of awareness.
