I think the best option is to buy both of them to reduce the risks. But in the long run, I believe Bitcoin may give better profit so you can consider investing more in bitcoins. This is just based on thinking so you need to think and make a decision which one you want to invest more.

Make the most of 2018 as it is  new year with new hopes and new beginning. Invest in altcoins to greater extent if possible in top coins because it is going to see some real rise in coming years. ICO are the best time to buy at the cheap price and holding may some time make you get a many times multiples returns.

Bitcoin protected its value and started another up trend now. LTC is still standing there with loss. I actually found last LTC move as a hype one. It made $3 to $350 increasing and this was too much extensively.

Don't wait for the right time when you are buying bitcoins because when it will start climbing the price again no one knows, as like in the past.
Litecoin is profitable but pace of its growth is too low. Diversify you investment and buy both if you are willing to buy because investing all your funds in a single coin would be risky.
If you are facing issues with coinbase then probably you need to check localbitcoins.com to easily exchange your usd to btc, but you will need to transfer them in any other wallet because exchanges are not safe place to hold you funds for long time.

So in this case you should have been bitcoin when the price is around $12K-$13K. The real question could have been when is the right entry point into any coin that we want to have good trade with. The entry point is what matter a lot. The lowest prices at which you buy the coin matters a lot because we can afford the margin that is created later on in the market. This margin could be very huge if you are train since the lower rates.

The point here is not about the new year start or before that (would have been)but its all about choosing right coin, right entry point and value for its market capitalism.

I think you already know the answer for your questions because these past few weeks, there's a dropping of value which is not that high compared last month of November year 2017. I think it is a good idea to invest in both bitcoin and altcoins since we are still in the early January. Bitcoin has so much potential and so does the altcoin too. Some altcoin such as Ripple,IOTA, ADA are even more cheaper and profitable than bitcoin at this time.
