The easiest way is to use an exchange. You can always send the coins to a wallet of your own. Another option is to find a seller using https://localbitcoins.com. |

Yeah ive used them both, what i meant was lets say i wanted to buy GAS...is it best to buy Ethereum and convert or litecoin and convert?

I believe that Litecoin has better fees. So you can buy LTC with Coinbase, send them to an exchange such as Binance, sell the LTC for BTC and buy your GAS. |

Coinbase is one of the most user friendly exchange to buy crypto, but it does have some high fees and only offers four coins currently. If you interested in alt coins you should check out bittrex, binance, or poloniex because they offer a large number of coins. Personally I prefer GDAX which is a owned by the same company as coin base, and they offer no fees for buying, selling or transferring. |

Where do you live, what Country? The Country you live in will drive which bitcoin exchanges are available to you. You mention USD so can we assume you live in the United States? If so, Coinbase is the easiest option...provided you don't live in Wyoming or Hawaii.
It takes a week or two to get verified but then you can buy Bitcoin/Litecoin/Ethereum with a credit card or checking account.

If you have fiat and only want those three, then coinbase is pretty straight forward. If you are flexible on time, then transfer your fiat from coinbase to GDAX and create a limit order, it will be free of cost for the buy. This will take a few days though to transfer fiat from your bank to Coinbase.
