It requires a lot of coins, but each masternode is worth $40k.  Some masternodes like DASH requires 1000 coins but worths $700k .  So the number of coins doesn't determine how much one masternode costs.  Also, with Medic Coin you have 5 lucky 9s. (199,999).  The Chinese and Indians revered the number 9.  So people might buy Medic to get lucky.

The nature of cryptocurrency is risk.  You only invest in what you can afford to lose.  Bigger doesn't mean better.  People thought that a bigger stock is safer, but look at Enron with a market cap of $60 billion ended up tanking.  So bigger is not better.
