Right now if you use a centralized provider like GitHub, your local repos live on your desktop, and you rely on GitHub to stay in sync with the global state. This is suboptimal. The future that the team imagines is that the Cardstack Hub will be the equivalent of your desktop. Your 'repos' can be stored anywhere (desktop, S3, IPFS, etc.) and the global state is recorded on a fast blockchain like Sawtooth.
