This sad for many of us event happened for several reasons. Certainly the news about hackers that stole a lot of coins (millions of USD equivalent of NEM). Bans of cryptos and restrictions in mining also have their influence. I believe that in Spring all altcoins will become to go up.

I think part of the reason is that some country are banning the coins and this will surely influence the price of the coins. Many platforms have been closed so that will also influence the price. But everything will be ok in the near future. And now is the best time to buy in more coins.

For your question on why the price of most coins has decreased.
The main reason is because if you actually look at the pairing of all coins, in order to purchase most of the coins, you either need btc/eth, meaning they are the main currency to be use for purchasing.

Hence, whenever both btc/eth drops, it might results other coins to drop in price too because of the paired value

We watched several big dumps during January, 2018, the worst time for all cryptocurrency. Probably some of the coins were overestimated, I do not know, but still I am sure the majority of them will be restored. The reason of the fall was the bad news about crypto (from Asia mostly).

I think it depends on the whales and community of a certain token/coins.  And also, price of bitcoin going down also affects altcoin price.

The price of the altcoins is decreasing because the price of the bitcoin decreases.
Currently, bitcoin is starting to getting recover again and now is a good time to invest in altcoin, because their price is lower than what should be in 1-2 weeks (not big difference, but there will be).

After the big correction, all investors are scared. Actually they just invest in the coins which they can trade against fiat money fast. Because they think that it will dump again. It is always bitcoin as the baseline for every dip of the altcoins. It will always be and that is just the usual scenario in the cryptocurrency market, once btc is down, almost 90% of the altcoins also goes down but take note that this dip is just temporary and still on the adjustment period. My interpretation on altcoin dip is that it will be an opportunity to buy coins at much cheaper price than the usual market price and hold it still at a longer period.

irrespective of the financial pump injected into a coin, if the coin doesn't gain favor of the users then it would be difficult for its prices to rise. with population favor, more is demanded leading to high prices in an effort to satisfy the demand. the alt coin project may not just have the won public approval while some lacking adequate funding to  further develop their projects.

Brilliant post and I completely agree with whatever your stated. It is quite obvious that there is a relationship between bitcoin and altcoins which is direct sometimes and inverse sometimes. Human thinking is what formed this relationship. I don't think that this relationship will ever disappear. This is not necessarily a bad thing in any manner whatsoever since bitcoin will continue to surge in value in the long term which will help majority of the popular altcoins like Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin etc. For example, just look at how many altcoins reached new all time highs recently when bitcoin reached $20k.

Can't you see what's going on with the market ? BTC for the most part goes down , the market has not decided on the direction . For the most part, market capitalization is declining . That pulls many altcoins to the bottom
