Established in Hangzhou, China in February 2004 by Alibaba Group, Alipay is a third-party mobile and online payment platform. In 2013, Alipay became the world’s largest mobile payment platform. In 2016, Alipay had a 54% part of China's US$5.5 trillion mobile payment market, by far the biggest in the world, although its share fell from 71% in 2015 as its competitor WeChat Pay was quickly catching up. WeChat is Chinese software developed by Tencent in 2011. In 2017, it became one of the largest standalone mobile applications by monthly active users. It is a multi-purpose social media mobile application; hence it is called China's "App for Everything" and a "Super App". Known for its Mini Programs characteristic which integrates many different tasks and programs, WeChat has gained huge popularity in a very short span of time.
