Just opened my laptop and started Bitcoin QT and received the message blockchain corrupt, I clicked OK and now it appears "Reindexing blocks - 204 weeks.

Also, my Bitcoins are Unconfirmed.

What happened, why the message?

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

I also got this error on 2 different computers.  One running 0.8.3 and one running 0.8.4.

The power went off for about fifteen minutes, lost internet connection.

That is the only thing different that has happened, Bitcoin QT was open and synced at the the time I lost the connection.

Got the same error just now. Cannot find anything useful in debug log. Running 0.8.4 on Win7 x64.

Is it just a few of us getting unlucky? or a 0.8.4 problem?

PS: a few more victims found in another forum thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=290831.0

After it finishes you should be working, but if you restart again it will fail again until you do the workaround described (or until the triggering transactions are far enough back that they are no longer subject to the startup time double checking).

How long to wait before problem is far enough back, two days/one week?

Once you are already stuck waiting won't help.  Add the -checklevel=2  command-line parameter  or checklevel=2 to bitcoin.conf.

Sorry, I do not know where to make the change, I do not know a great deal about technical things on a computer.

Any assistance is appreciated.

just applied the workaround and its all working  - thanks Smiley

seafarer: make a shortcut and in the properties go to the "target" field and put in

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe" -checklevel=2

You'll need to change the program files part if yours is in a diff directory

Thanks for the information.

I will try when the client has finished Reindexing, down to 9 days behind.

Has taken nearly all day, bit of a pain.
