I have the same problem to understanding technical and the fundamental of the project is hard for me, and to know which coin has great future i just follow some expert that has more knowledge about blockchain technology.

I think it happen when that coin have something special like good team or new innovation that will interest more investor. But I think the big factor is Luck. I have seen many coin which have good project but finally it failed.

I would say be realistic and just because you have spent hours researching don't be afraid to walk away and not invest.
