Bitcoin-Qt version 0.8.5 is now available from:
  http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/Bitcoin/bitcoin-0.8.5/

This is a maintenance release to fix a critical bug;
we urge all users to upgrade.

Please report bugs using the issue tracker at github:
  https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/issues

How to Upgrade
--------------

If you are running an older version, shut it down. Wait
until it has completely shut down (which might take a few minutes for older
versions), then run the installer (on Windows) or just copy over
/Applications/Bitcoin-Qt (on Mac) or bitcoind/bitcoin-qt (on Linux).

If you are upgrading from version 0.7.2 or earlier, the first time you
run 0.8.5 your blockchain files will be re-indexed, which will take
anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the speed of
your machine.

0.8.5 Release notes
===================

Bugs fixed
----------

Transactions with version numbers larger than 0x7fffffff were
incorrectly being relayed and included in blocks.

Blocks containing transactions with version numbers larger
than 0x7fffffff caused the code that checks for LevelDB database
inconsistencies at startup to erroneously report database
corruption and suggest that you reindex your database.

This release also contains a non-critical fix to the code that
enforces BIP 34 (block height in the coinbase transaction).

--

Thanks to Gregory Maxwell and Pieter Wuille for quickly
identifying and fixing the transaction version number bug.

How often do you get the chance to work on a potentially world-changing project?

Stupid question... but is this supposed to also be available on bitcoin.org? If not, does that mean this is a testing only release?

What a relief. Thanks for staying on top of things. I was having this issue myself and was hesitant to re-index the database. Glad I didn't go through with it.

Thanks a bunch Gavin!

Shouldn't this thread be stickied instead of the 0.8.4 one?

My Bitcoin QT client has just "crashed" again. I used it this morning without any problems, went to open it up just now and it said something like "couldn't index the blocks" and "would I like to re-index the blockchain" just like it did earlier in the week when the bug originally surfaced.

Might I have done something wrong or is there another bug?

This report is a bit vague...

Was this on 0.8.5 (released less than 72 hours ago) or the previous version which didn't have the bugfix?

I was just about to upgrade but then I saw your post & panicked Sad

Edited to add:

Working on Win7x64. Thanks guys!

Same here...

Reindex seems to be going normally. has finished, and bitcoin-qt is now running normally.

@bitcoinchecker: I don't think your crash is happening for everyone / I wasn't able to reproduce during upgrade from 0.8.4 to 0.8.5

Yes, it's still the old version for some reason.

I must have downloaded the updated wrongly.

But how come everything was working ok this morning?

Interesting.  Installed the update and currently re-indexing; fingers crossed that will be the end of this issue. I'm on a PC running WB 7. According to other info I've received I should have never started re-indexing when the problem first occurred and just installed the 0.8.5 fix.  Unfortunately, I did not learn of the fix until too late.  Thanks for responding and hope all goes well for you.

I've been updating each time, yesterday to 8.5, which appeared to work fine

Just restarted my machine (Due to a bloody forced windows update!) and bitcoin-qt stated the block chain was corrupt and needed re-indexing.

Doesn't seem right :/

When the PPA ver will be added?  Huh
I am not sure how I can tell what version is  being offered via the PPA.....
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, via the PPA. I got a 'corrupted database' error when starting up yesterday, which I thought was strange. I keep backups, and I restored the previous day's data but still got a problem running bitcoin qt. I then restored  the data from a week ago, still problems. I ended up accepting a re index, and it seems ok  now in the morning. I was getting curious as to why the backup  data still apparently gave problems, but if a bug was the cause, then that explains it. I guess (??) tat the PPA has given me an update by now? The debug window states that the version is
