I'm afraid if your thinking to invest in ICO because I heard many of newly introduced ICO's are scam, I am not saying all, but some of them so you have to do some research before investing. If you really want a long-term investment you can go with BTC because it dominates the market share in digital currency and has the most trading volume. If you plan to invest in altcoins, ETH would be your best choice because of its sustainability and potential growth same as BTC.

I am now holding a bigger variety of coins myself and I believe ETHOS, EOS, ICON, VEN AND CARDANO have a good way to go. I also decided to buy a couple of hundred of WANCHAIN as well. I am now also waiting for QUARKCHAIN to launch as it will be the first ever coin to introduce cross sharding. Telegram is down at the moment but their ICO will be in may/june sometime so I am hoping I can get a few eth in that before it explodes on the exchanges because I believe that might be a good one to get into early on. I missed out getting all the other infrastructure coins really early so this time I do not want to miss that chance anymore.

Try to buy low coins/tokens that is in top 100 in coinmarketcap like TRX , ADA , DCN , etc. Since this will consider as long term who knows maybe one day you are already a millionaire just holding those crypto .

So you posted this query around february, by that time the market is on its bearish state. I hope you bought a tonne of coins especially those in the top 15 in markep cap. Personally, for long term holding, I suggest to invest in TRX and ADA they have a really long term active goal and I truly trust these coins.

If we want to long run with our crypto investment, better choose bitcoin or ethereum. Both coin is more safe for long term because daily volume transaction is biggest in market.

If you have a decent amount of capital but you do not want an expensive coin then ethereum is the best coin to invest since the price do really have the potential to increase even more in the market, so keep your eth coins if you have a huge amount of it.

In my opinion 50% of your portfolio should be for BTC and ETH because many expert predicted BTC will going up to $92K and ETH will be to $2500 in 1 or 2 years.
