Im looking for a secure way to communicate with long distance friends and colleagues. What are my options these days? Are there secure VOIPs chat channels or something compared to pgp (something less tiresome) ?

You could use SSH tunnelling. If you are using Linux, Pigdin also have an encryption feature to chat.

How many pigeons do you need to actually make this work? You need pigeons to send key exchange prior to sending the message. Also pigeons to proof of receive the message. you might need at least 12 pigeons to make this work. Also you need to be able to check if the pigeons have been compromise, such as pigeons from another source which pretend to me the sender or receiver. Also this will be seasonal, you will not be able to transfer any messages during the pigeon hunting season.

True. But reading your mail is harder for the gov than say Internet traffic. The laws regarding mail are from a time when we had more protection from spying. I think it is still true that a letter is much more secure than an email. Similar to the difference between tapping a phone line vs. an Internet connection.  But who knows what the government is up to now.

You forgot about the pigeons that check if the receiver is ready to receive.

Are you trolling? This thread is about secure ways, not about unsecure ways   No one cares about your film, but if you have to fight against industrial espionage then you need a secure way to communicate

No, I am not trolling. If you're involved in work in a high profile business, then secure communication matters. But is that the case for those here seeking secure communication? I'd be curious to hear the motivations.
