Secure ways to comunicate?

Im looking for a secure way to communicate with long distance friends and colleagues. What are my options these days? Are there secure VOIPs chat channels or something compared to pgp (something less tiresome) ?

No, I am not trolling. If you're involved in work in a high profile business, then secure communication matters. But is that the case for those here seeking secure communication? I'd be curious to hear the motivations.

We are chatting about several new start up business ideas and looking to be more secure about it. Not exactly high profile but still not something we want to be snooped on.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Btw the pigeon thing is funny but it is something I have been talking about for about 2 years. I live in the stick and I would be cool to have a few friends with flocks to send messages back and forth.

How many pigeons do you need to actually make this work? You need pigeons to send key exchange prior to sending the message. Also pigeons to proof of receive the message. you might need at least 12 pigeons to make this work. Also you need to be able to check if the pigeons have been compromise, such as pigeons from another source which pretend to me the sender or receiver. Also this will be seasonal, you will not be able to transfer any messages during the pigeon hunting season. 

You forgot about the pigeons that check if the receiver is ready to receive.

Exactly, even though it could be a good method for communication. But damn you will need lots of pigeons to send one message.

True. But reading your mail is harder for the gov than say Internet traffic. The laws regarding mail are from a time when we had more protection from spying. I think it is still true that a letter is much more secure than an email. Similar to the difference between tapping a phone line vs. an Internet connection.  But who knows what the government is up to now.

Well the pigeons only fly one way, back to their cope. So you would have to exchange birds with the person you want to talk to. They would receive there birds back with messages from you and visa verse. Getting a phantom bird wont happen. As far as a key you would just make one with your partner prior to sending birds. We where thinking of doing this as more of a hobbie/shtf thing. You can also eat the birds and eggs unlike chickens doves mature in 9 weeks. You could also race from long distances. Hunting season would be a challenge though...
Im guessing a decent flock would be adound 30-90 birds.

The OS is just one layer. Switching to Linux is meaningless if you continue to use Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo, or really, ANY email or communications product that's not under your control (ie, any webmail product, any POP/IMAP mail account for which you don't directly own and manage the physical server (as opposed to running a virtualized instance elsewhere).

There is so much more at play here, that just blindly adopting Linux. It requires a rethinking of how you use the web to communicate and information.
