Not only are the scammers doing the fake accounts that say "send .02 BTC and get triple" but apparently now they are either buying verified accounts or hacking them and changing the names and pictures to cryptocurrency people. Now it can actually be hard to tell if someone is scamming.

An example:https://twitter.com/officialmcafee/status/967887920991559681

Really shitty that this is happening. Be careful everyone

This is very unfortunate. There are always people out there trying to game any system rather than doing things right. Sad.

Yikes. How the hell are the scammers getting the blue "verified" tick? Shouldn't be that easy right? Twitter needs to up their game as soon as possible.

They are hacking people outside of cryptocurrency with verified badges and then changing their name. On other platforms, if you change your name you have to get reverified ( which only seems right ) but I guess on twitter you don't have too.

Scammers are scammers,we cant do anything about them but to put extra cares, and dont just trust anyone that offers you something like big income without doing appropriate to earn such offer..and most of the time people become victims becauseof greediness, not thinking of right thing but just to earn from nothing

Oooh. This makes more sense. They probably target the not-so-famous verified people on twitter right? And yea, why the heck are they free to change their names without a re-verification. Huge flaw on Twitter's part for sure. These scammers are freakin clever though.

People should really be smart enough to know not to fall for such scams. There was another case with someone posing as Ethereum founder, saying send 0.5 ETH and get 5 ETH in return. Seriously, how gullible can people be? If Vitalik wanted to give away ETH, wouldn't it be easier to just say "post your ETH address here and receive 5ETH"? Why would he have to take ETH from you first? People need to wise up!

Some people are just simply getting blinded by their greed, unfortunately. Everyone just wants to get rich, and they saw this opportunity as a sort of easy-way-out of poverty. The poor gets poorer, I guess. Look at the bright side though, they most probably learned their lesson.

If this is true it should be reported to Twitter management, and the real account owner should also report this to authorities because they are using this for nefarious activities, and this will ruin their reputation.

Now it can actually be hard to tell if someone is scamming.

just because some account on Twitter or elsewhere says verified doesn't mean what they say is also gold. and it is not just about scamming, there is a lot of bullshit out there from actual people with verified accounts spreading FUD and misinformation. and i'd say the hardness of telling if they are scamming or not depends on the person reading this stuff. some people are simply gullible and would fall for anything even if it were a random twitter account created yesterday.

Report them to twitter so they're forced to make changes. These are getting ridiculous though. It's starting to seem to me like there are more scammers in crypto than any other industry. They must love that the transactions are irreversible.

As a side note, I would also consider McAfee's ICO investment advice to be somewhat scammish, but maybe that's just me.

Yeah i always see like that scam. Scammer do anything to get money even though people will mad on him. He dont care about you. Thats why we need more extra careful. And i think avoid investing in a yoken that didnt have enough information like white paper or etc that make as satisfy.

Yes, there are a lot of scammers out on Twitter. When I first got real into crypto, I almost fell for a fake message that came from an account that copied the name and picture of a CEO of one of the coins and it said they'd send 3 ETH if I sent them a little bit. Now it sounds crazy that people would even think about this but it happens and almost got me. Twitter needs to fix this asap!

While it's horrible what they're doing, people kinda have to be scammed in order to notice that people on the internet are not always good people. It's a lesson that you learn by paying, and we're all trying to teach the lesson for free to people. Though some will only learn by paying the price.

It gives us a horrible name in crypto to have this sort of thing happening though, hope these people get in some big trouble when the time comes for them.

There are a lot of scammers trying to take advantages on beginners in crypto. If anyone have friends that interested in crypto, teach them and let them know all about cryptocurrencies, don't let them get scammed. If a lot of peoples get scammed they won't believe in cryptocurrency.
