Buying Alts with ETH or BTC

It is amazingly confusing for me to understand whether to buy ETH or BTC to trade for ALTS. I plan on holding a good % of BTC and ETH in my portfolio, but when it comes to these fluctuating BTC and ETH prices, I'm never sure whether to buy one first to trade for ALT coins.

Any suggestions?

Both coins are good selections but if I were you I would probably choose ETH because as we can see ETH has a greater value than BTC.

Better if you buy altcoins, divide your funds in both since both of the coins do have great potential to grow someday.

I will rather buy altcoin and some token with fiat if the option is available, Bitcoin and ethereum is too valuable to spent on any coin that might not last! Nobody really know if these coin will succeed or not. But bitcoin  and ethereum is different!

I think you should use eth to buy alts. I suggest to you for many reasons. I think the price of eth may be stable and not be falling but now btc price is falling and no one knows where it stops. Two main active assets in my portfolio are eth and btc. I use btc in trading and  fix the income in btc. I use eth for investing into ICO. In such a way, the change of Bitcoin in my wallet allowes to define how successfully I'm trading, and Ethereum shows how successfully I invest to ICO. 
I suppose this year Etherium will draw level with Bitcoin in capitalization and we'll have two cryptocurrency standards.

I'm a beginning trader like yourself.  My plan is now with the market in complete shambles to switch out of Bitcoin and into alts.  Once the market reaches a peak I will get out of alts and into Bitcoin.  Wash, rinse and repeat over and over.
