It is amazingly confusing for me to understand whether to buy ETH or BTC to trade for ALTS. I plan on holding a good % of BTC and ETH in my portfolio, but when it comes to these fluctuating BTC and ETH prices, I'm never sure whether to buy one first to trade for ALT coins.

Any suggestions?

BTC should be the first priority. Bitcoin is the safest cryptocurrency for investment because it has the biggest market cap among all of the cryptocurrencies that exist.

So do you think other coins do not fluctuate? You should know that the whole crypto has a high fluctuation potential. I think your choice is correct to buy alt with btc or eth, because the best pair in trade is btc or eth.

I believe bitcoin fluctuates less than Eth, so if you're just looking for a coin to trade with alts, it should be BTC. But, I guess you could take a chance with Eth too.

However I find that when Eth fluctuates wildly, the alt eth prices fluctuate wildly too. So there's really no benefit in trying to game the system thinking you can get a better eth price just because you're buying/selling in eth.

Then you must prioritized the bitcoin. We know that the bitcoin is the most trusted and safest among the all cryptocurrency for the investment because we know that is the leading in the market.but it is your choice even i suggest or recommend my opinion if you can't follow my suggestion there's nothing do with my suggestion.

I will trade with Bitcoin then, but I guess a follow up question would be, if I buy right now since it is down, do I then trade for alts or wait again for the BTC price to rise since it will be worth more on each trade? Or is that flawed logic?

Yes, it is a good suggestion, but I suggest you hold more BTC, because as the ICO market cooled, so for the demand of the ETH become less, ETH price will fall, so buy BTC is a good choice.

I see more prospects in the ethereum. It is constantly evolving. As long as the ICO is on the ethereum platform, it will be in demand. I absolutely agree and understand, but what I'm asking is if I want to diversify my portfolio a little bit while still holding onto a large percentage of BTC and ETH, how should I go about purchasing/trading for ALTS. I would like to buy and hold a few that I've researched, but what confuses me is whether I buy BTC and then trade with Alts or ETC and trade with Alts. The conversion confuses me and/or if I should trade them when BTC and ETC are High or Low.

It does not really matters what asset to use to purchase altcoins. The main thing here is studying technical and fundamental data and entering the market at strong support points strengthened buy good fundamental data. No one has canceled the technical analysis and I think that in future it will overwhelm the fundamental in terms of the influence on the market!

I think eth is the best to buy the price now is less than 600 and with price I the perfect time to buy. I am confident with this because base on what I understand eth and bitcoin is always made a way back to recover the former highest price and also it can grow more than that.

I think ETH is best choice for buying Alts or any crypto platform.  Because ETH network is really fast as BTC. Many people use ETH for trading, ETH free is low and it easy to find. So i think ETH is the best choice for newbie. You can use it.

For me both are nice , we will invest in dibitcoin and eth, and I will trade on Alt. I think it's very easy to earn profits every day ,  because bitcoin and et prices always go up over time, so we'll get a lot of bitcoin.

Over the near future, if you see ETH is going to have a better rally then BTC, then its better to keep ETH as in your portfolio and invest in ALTs using BTC, on the other hand, during BTC bull run, there is no sense of risking your BTC in ALTs, rather than diversify your ETH into ALTs to earn more BTC. If you are going to buy ERC20 tokens during their ICO stage, you may need to buy some eth first, because most of them only accept eth as payment during that stage. However, if the altcoins that you are going to buy already exists in the exchange market, btc is always the best choice because buying altcoins with btc is usually cheaper than buying with eth.

It is better to buy bitcoin than ethereum, the price of bitcoin is continue to increase and you will have more profit than the ethereum although ethereum has many uses but in terms of profit, bitcoin is more profitable than ethereum and the market cap of it is continue to have a high value.

As all of the other coins, ethereum and bitcoin has really volatile prices too. It is not an easy decision to make between this two, so, I think you should think according to current prices of them.

My suggestion is buy with BTC. Bitcoin is really volatile. But if you know how to play games on this kind of bearish market. You can earn some profits. Try the scalping method, try to buy on every dips and sell it when you are already happy or already have profits. I prefer to choose those undervalued altcoins.

In the alts, you are not sure, but in bitcoin you have hope or that. Yes, the market leader no one argues, but how good it is unlike other coins or you think that the only one who will grow. In my opinion, alts has a greater future than bitcoin.

I personally think this time is down trend of Bitcoin and Eth and eth according to the market situation and this will create the more panic sale for some peoples who are holding these coins and this time is eth price is $550 from $1200 and bitcoin price is $7500 and their high price was $18000 and i think there are equal chances in both bitcoin and eth because both are currently at their low price.

Why not choose BTC and ETH. I divided my fund into ETH and BTC. It is the best coin to me. BTC and ETH are all future trends, and they all have significant growth in 2017 - the glory to ETH and BTC. . There is no reason to choose 1 in 2 if you have enough funds and an idea to take off just be patient to hold in long enough.

During huge dump time, altcoins are losing value compared to eth or bitcoin.

Hi, to my mind, the problem is that both ETH and BTC are highly speculative.  I am using ETH to buy IOTA

For me, it's better to hold on these cryptocurrencies as their market price are getting lower and lower each day. If you have them in your portfolio, hodl them. If you want to buy alt coins since the market is bleeding, then try another alternatives to get some of your prospective alts.

I have found it a better experience using my ethereum to buy altcoins and late if I want more eth then I just convert some btc to eth. Thread is months old now, and take a look at how your portfolio would have performed had you done one thing or the other.  I did not glance at the charts for eth or btc, but my off the cuff guesstimation is that you would have done better had you just purchased bitcoin and held it.  Back in march, ethereum was much higher than it is now, iirc.  Many other coins were the same way, and the market was in a period of explosive, yet unsustainable, growth.  A mini bubble, if you will.

You should use eth to buy alt and I think its very good decision for you. If you are using king coin then its not a good idea for now. In my opinion, rather using eth will give you a good amount which you give you a good return and a good profit for now and king coin should be held for the future.

So, decide whether to trade with which coin according to the volume of the coin in ETH or BTC which ever is more. All the DEX have ETH pairs, so you will need ETH in that case. A very tight situation you are but personally if am to advice I will advice you to hold on to your ethereum and BTC because the many ALT coins around now make it difficult for one to know the good ones from the bad ones. I agree with your insights rwgarding some Altcoins depends on how Ethereum fluctuates and the Eth depends on Bitcoin as well and that is what had happened and that is how everything works in this cryptocurrency industry. I agree. Bitcoin and ethereum is safest crypto where to invest with because it has good potential for growing. Every coin fluctuates and you have to analyze it before you decide for the value before buying. It is good to buy high volume of each coins and hold it for the long time because the value now is more cheaper which can give good profit in the future.

altcoins fluctuate more than bitcoin and ethereum.  being in low market caps, altcoin prices can be manipulated easier, thus fluctuates more.  this presents advantages for traders as they can use this to earn more.  greater risk = greater reward.
