Go for the latest, it will have a higher resell value if you decide to get rid of it.
But HD 7970 is way cheaper on 2nd hand market

But HD 7970 is way cheaper on 2nd hand market and 280X is new tech and more efficient. Should be the same, its just rebranding...

It's the same card as 7970 Ghz edition (working at 1000 instead of 1050Mhz) just with the new shiny name.

Don't buy either R9 280x or HD 7970. ASIC for scrypt is coming.... you would have big problem then...

Yes, the only way to recognize them form "regular: R9 290X will be to read BIOS with GPU-Z. Now every R9 280X is using Tahiti XT2 GPU. I hope they will have smaller VGPU, something in the range 1,09-1,13V would be nice.

All I've heard so far indicates that it's a lottery to get the XTL or XT2 if you buy a 280X right now. Some posts say only HIS and MSI so far. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18552055Post #13 [08:37:20] CHINA: yes, new shipment from AMD will be XTL instead of XT2 [08:40:39] GIBBO: what is the exact difference please? There is no difference on the specification between XT2 and XTL. The only difference maybe that the overclockability of XT2 is better than XTL. [10:14:27] GIBBO: why is that m8? [10:14:30] GIBBO: different power design? [10:14:53] GIBBO: Will XTL feature the new HD sound found on R260X and R290's ? [10:16:35] CHINA: well, i got this from my product development people [10:17:12] CHINA: maybe related to the screening [10:17:37] GIBBO: so in short current version is better for OC then [10:17:48] CHINA: you are correct
Seems that current R280X are using the full blown HD 7970 GHz chip and the new XTL version will be a lower cost design which gives the same performance out the box, but won't have the OC headroom of the current chip.

SNIP Seems that current R280X are using the full blown HD 7970 GHz chip and the new XTL version will be a lower cost design which gives the same performance out the box, but won't have the OC headroom of the current chip. You mean the new one is cheaper and worse off? I haven't heard of anyone with one in hand, so I don't think anybody has an idea if it's better or worse. Gibbo's definition of worse off is probably based on how high he can the GPU, not hash rate. Going through the convo again, it's possible for the XTL to be a less leaky chip (easier to undervolt, less power, decreased heat, cannot clock as high). I looked at the LTC mining hardware comparison. Fastest hashing 7970 is at 1085/1500 w/ a voltage of 1.1 (undervolted). That same clock speed should be achievable easily with a XTL, as hashrates are not dependent on hitting 1300MHz on air. Last I heard it reduce power consumption, any idea?
Nothing new yet.

A used 7970 is going for around $200. You will get between 700-800 KHs mining ltc. A new R9 280X is going cost you $300 or more for the same hash rate. Cheaper to get the 7970.
