We should all donate for our very own bitcoin satelite!

I would donate for this.

I think moon is a little to over the top, but satellite would be more feasible.

Hey man, I for one don't want "feasable".

If it's too expensive now, we can just wait.

How about collecting bitcoins into an escrow and as soon as exchange rate makes it possible, we'll do it?

Of course there needs to be a deadline when the coins will be given back should that point never come. Like 2020 or something.

How about we build our own small rocket and shoot it to the moon to implant the flag?

Like we see with iphones and weather baloons.

Either way get it crowdfunded in bitcoins http://www.bitcoinstarter.com

How about we used the stash we collected (I described in previous post) as a bounty. Whoever puts a bitcoin flag onto the moon first will get the coins.

How come no one is even mentioning Tony Stark's real life counterpart Elon Musk's SpaceX?

www.spacex.com

I am pretty sure they can give you a quote if you send them an email or twitter. Cheesy
We should do this. It would be too funny.

My anger against what is wrong in the Bitcoin community is productive:
Bitcointa.lk - Replace "Bitcointalk.org" with "Bitcointa.lk" in this url to see how this page looks like on a proper forum (Announcement Thread)

Who?

We can just hide the private key on the dark side of the moon, uh, wait...

Well, the U.S is the only country that has ever put a man on the moon. The fact that it was done over 40 years ago, and no other country has felt the need to also do so, leads me to believe that its either very costly, or very hard to do.

I think we would be better off with something like local advertising, rather than putting a flag on the moon where only aliens will see it.  Smiley

a man is much harder than a flag. Life support and a return are unecessary.

http://www.googlelunarxprize.org/blog/moon-roundup-big-picture

I don't know exactly what the goal was/is of lunar x-prize, but if I remember, the plan was to shoot a bot to the moon, have it drive around and send a HD livestream back to earth.

I don't buy the "but we could use the money much better for xyz" story. Using that argument we'd probably still be in the stone age.

Because small rockets cant escape earth's gravity, much less reach the moon. Escape velocity from earth is about mach 34. What small rocket did you have in mind?

That said, a micro/nano/pico satellite is feasible and economically doable:

technically to get to the mun, you arnt escaping kerbins earths gravity, your just orbiting the planet and elongating your orbit to get within the muns gravioli field so you can orbit it then land.

perhaps a better and more cost effective idea would be to send and receive a bitcoin transaction on the ISS.

Haha I really like your idea.

thanks everyone for chipping in ideas. I love this thread.

Now, it seems THE MOON is such a big target that we can't even think about it seriously (yet), although I still think it might not be as expensive as some think and also that a skyrocketing bitcoin price could make it feasable pretty quickly, I'm warming up to the other ideas (I'm still thinking about setting up an escrow pool to start collecting bitcoins because, well 1.) collecting many coins now seems easier than when they're $20,000 a piece and 2.) it'll remove coins from the market for a time). Anywhichway: we will have enough time for this going forward.

I do like the other ideas, namely:

  • 1.) put bitcoin onto ISS somehow
  • 2.) put bitcoin onto a satellite or even make bitcoin satellite

1.) would probably easy as soon as we have someone going there in the boat... the type of network access they have there might be very restricted or not even suitable, though, so that'd have to be figured out. Also: how much sense does it make to take a blockchain (probably not much, syncing it is likely out of the question), just making a transaction would probably be good enough? What story could we use with the transaction?

2.) I've heard some college or even school projects putting mini-satellites into orbit, but what would really we want there? A full node would obviously be desireable, but is it possible (how about such big storage and type of hardware able to run in the conditions? How long do we want it to stay up there? How to sync the blockchain if we have one)

Another quick idea for the satellite: In case it has at least a wallet, we could have it generate a key once up there, then send donations to incentivize space dust collection research Wink

EDIT: we could also just shoot a bunch of gold into orbit, but that's less cool, not "bitcoin" and the value can't be updated.

EDIT2: having lots of money "up there" would also create incetive to keep it in orbit until it can be collected

How about we put 3 bitcoin miners on 3 geosynchronous satellites, where they can store a copy each of the block chain, and then if we ever lose all our computers on earth maybe 1 of the satellites will still function... keeping the blockchain going, and the network (albeit slow)

I don't think the entire bitcoin economy in it's current state could fund such a venture Sad

You could put a raspberry Pi or beaglebone or something in it. It wouldnt survive the radiation very long, but then neither would the satellite anyway. Without motors and fuel, it will come down fairly fast again. IM not sure if anyone has done it so far, but have a look here:
http://www.zdnet.com/raspberry-pi-in-space-putting-the-linux-pc-into-orbit-7000000577/

Could it actually run a full node and keep it in sync? Im not sure we'd have the communication bandwidth for that, so I kinda doubt it.
